How should I be feeding my diabetic cat?

I am injecting her twice a day, once in the morning and once 12 hours later.

Should I be feeding her half of her daily food with the first injection, and half with the second injection? I've currently been feeding her with the morning injection, giving her a meal around 16:00 and then injecting her in the evening. But I've found she always asks for food during the day.

Is it better to feed in small amounts throughout the day? (I work from home, which would allow me to do this.)

Should I be as strict as possible in terms of the recommended guidelines for feeding her? If she asks for food, and she's had the recommended amount, should I avoid giving her any more?

I feed mine twice a day and inject after eating.
Many feed smaller meals throughout the day and that may be better. You just should be consistent day to day with amount and time of feeding.

Until her glucose levels are under control, you may need to feed her several meals a day. Her body is not processing food properly and that is why she is always hungry.

Are you hometesting? That is the best way to determine how well your insulin and dose are working.

My vet asked me to keep a record of my cats food, water, pee, poop and behavior when she was first diagnosed. It was very helpful to him and to me to get a real perspective on what was going on with her. Fortunately, she eats about every 2 hours on her own when the food is available, which he said goes a long way to keep her glucose regulated and may explain why she went into remission so quickly. Sometimes she ate a lot, but other times she just ate a bite or two. I know all cats are different, but if the food is available to her, perhaps her own instincts might kick in to eat when she needs to and help her regulate herself.

I have found it difficult to regulate food because Dre does not always eat-
we are finding a balance but it takes time.....:bighug:
