Hello all! How often should I test? I have been testing twice a day... usually after meals because he is pretty low before (under 30... like 27..) so anyway, how often should I test? thanks!
you're prob ok about once a week, and gradually slowing down to one a month. Some people test weekly or daily, its up to you.
unless something looks off, or he's having a not so good day, you could keep a closer eye on him.
I test once a week. Unless I see Bandit drinking out of his water dish (he's not a drinker). Then I freak out and test immediately. I'm thinking I might do a curve with him this weekend, since we haven't done one since he went OTJ. His random check this week had him at 64! That's very low for Bandit, who always runs in the 90-120 range. I have no idea what might cause a sudden drop.
One time it was a good thing I did my oh-my-god-he's-drinking-water check--saw him drinking and tested and his BG was nearly 400! Turns out my brother left 3 slices of pizza in a box in his room, which Bandit found, dragged under the bed and devoured. All 3 slices, crust and all. Because he dragged the box under the bed, I had no idea why his BG was high and thought he had gone out of remission. I just so happened to step in the box on day 2 of the high BG when I went to check on my other cat. Took over 2 days to clear those carbs, but he finally did and we didn't have to start insulin again.
I tested a couple of times a day for a while after he was OTJ, then weaned on down to once a week now. He got off the juice in October, 2010. I am sticking to once a week for a while.
I have two OTJ cats. The first one, Ivan, has been off insulin since last spring. I test him once a month. The second one, Garamond or Grey Man, has been off for about 6 weeks. I am still testing him twice a week.
If either of them decides to drink water or eat more than normal, I would reach for their meter nailbite_smile
