How my cat has handled diabetes

My cat, Bam-Bam got diagnosed on Jan 10, 2026. We were wondering what was going on in December 2025, when he was peeing excessively, drinking access water and his appetite was crazy. And he was 16.68lbs 9/29/25 and 13.6 on 1/10/26. We went back and forth about getting him on bexacat because of the side effects. But eventually we gave in. Lately he does drink water a good amount still. He started the bexacat on Jan 31. Went for his checkup on the 6th day. His weight went up, however his ketosis were at 1.3 and should be between 0.2 to 0.8. We go back on Feb 13th. What gets me worried is that his sugar isn't regulated yet and he's been getting aggressive with his kitty brother and sister. He even bit my 11 year daughter this morning while she was just petting his head. He eats 1.5 cans of Fancy Feast in the morning and 1.5 at night with his medicine. I've made plain chicken for some in between meals. I haven't tried testing at home yet. We do have purina one high protein dry food, but I don't give it to him much. He also has muscloskeletal and I believe he's in pain from that and not being regulated. Anyone else have these problems and cat turned out fine.

I can start by saying that the Purina dry dog food is High carbs, diabetic cats need to have a diet of wet can food or raw diet between 0-10% carbs, are you giving insulin? Lantus or ProZinc are the best insulin for cats they are a 12-hour insulin, easy on the cats system, are you home testing? Glucose monitoring at the vet is never accurate, cats are very sensitive to stress, and their glucose level is very elevated causing to give high doses of insulin, or increases, most members use the ReliOn Premier human monitor (Walmart) you do not need a pet meter very expensive, any human monitor will be fine, it is important for a diabetic cat to have low carb foods, home testing and a feeding schedule several meals during the day 3-4 will keep your cat satisfied and insulin in check plus testing before each shot is very important, I will tag a member that can also assist you with your concerns, please continue to post we are here to guide you and help you on your journey with FD, which is very manageable, with the right insulin, home testing, a diet of low carbs between 0-10% carbs, (no grazing,( no kibbles), and lots of love 🤗

You might want to consider a wet food feeder here are some models, some Have cameras , is important being diabetic that they eat several meals during the day to keep the glucose level and insulin in check

The second image Corky posted only works with dry food. The other two images are suitable for canned food.
 
If he continues to lose weight it may be that the Bexacat is not working, the glucose level must still be very high the excess water drinking is a sign, I am not familiar with this medication I will tag someone that can help you with it

I would not automatically assume that weight loss is due to Bexacat not working.

Many cats who are switched to a high protein/low carb diet lose weight. (This is the kitty version of the Atkins diet.) I'd also be sure that your feeding your cat the number of calories that are needed. Many of the low carb foods are lower in calories that what we have previously fed our cats.
 
Yesterday my daughter found throw up on the bed. Looked to be brown and think it's a hairball. But somehow was on the wall too. So not really sure. And this morning there was flem on the floor. We're going to get his check up for his bexacat today. 2 weeks on it.
 
Chewy.com sell many brands of hairball preventives, just make sure the ingridients have no sweeteners

I would definitely talk to the vet. Vomiting is not listed as one of the worrisome side effects of Bexacat but every cat is different. If you've not seen our post on the new treatments, it may be helpful.

If you need to switch to insulin, remember that Prozinc and Lantus are the preferred insulins for treating feline diabetes.
 
I talked to the vet. His ketosis are at .2 and weight is ok at 13.6. The vet said as long as the vomiting doesn't continue or have blood their not worrying about it. But now his lil kitty brother is growling again at him. And I didn't give bam bam a bath once we got home. I agreed to blood work to check oh his kidneys and liver. Waiting for that. And have another appointment in 2 weeks.
 
So yesterday when we were going to get ready for the vet cat went and hid. And then today when we went to go somewhere. He went and hid behind the couch again. Is this normal.
 
Typical cat :) Your cat has associated the vet with bad things and is now hiding. And you just getting ready to go out has the same association with bad vet. It will take some time for your cat to not hide every time he sees you putting on a coat and shoes. Feliway or other product may be helpful.
 
Corky's carrier is in the closet, when he sees me putting it up on the bed, and that is usually once a year for his rabies shot, he runs and hides under the blanket, he's not a runner, but he sure runs when he sees it

Definitely that’s a hair ball, Coco the Main Coon, her hair ball looks like a giant thick poop, is BIG! I see from the picture the center is long and hard so yeah is a hair ball, this is very relieving for cat, because when the hairball it’s tuck a bit, they don’t eat as much usual, at least mine don’t or In several occasions Coco right after eating throws up, and an hour or so later the hair ball comes out

the chicken most likely got stuck in the hair ball, it's ok that is normal, when the hair is about to be expulsed, and he eats, the residue of the food stuck in it comes out with it
