how much?

How much canned cat food should I feed my baby when I get her transitioned over from dry?

She is 10ish lbs, not overweight, large cat. Her vet wants her fed twice a day, the amount of w/d was 1/2 cup.

When unregulated, we fed our 14 pound Maine Coon 3 cans of Fancy Feast daily. Until the insulin is keeping them in lower numbers, their bodies are not using the food efficiently and they are very hungry. Once regulated, we lowered his food to 2 cans a day.

Most people here feed small frequent meals, to help support the pancreas and keep the kitty's hunger at bay. Food can spike the bg numbers, so smaller meals more often can keep it on a more even keel. To free feed, we either freeze the wet food and leave it out to thaw, or use an automatic feeder.

thank you

she's doing well on her transition. Her numbers are still crazy. So far we're only doing 2 sticks, am and pm.
Last night her sugar was 109 so no insulin, this morning it was 397 so she got shot. Hardest part so far is getting her to bleed.

here ya go, Karisa - some ideas that people gave me for getting the blood tested. http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=37627

one of the most important reasons for home testing is that your immediate danger is from Tasha's blood sugar going too low. that can send them into an immediate crisis. too high of blood sugar causes damage over time. the way Lantus works (I think you said elsewhere that you are using Lantus, right?) the low point is somewhere in between the shots. it can vary, but my punkin's low was about 5 hours after the shots for several weeks, now it seems to be about 7 or 8 hours after. Anyway, the point is that you really, really need to get some tests in between the shots so that you know Tasha's not going too low. i absolutely sympathize with how hard it is, too. i've only been at this since February myself. but it does get easier with practice.

her blood sugar this morning being 397 was because she didn't have any insulin last night. the way lantus works you need to give them the same dose 12 hours apart. you can give a shot of insulin at 109 if you've been hometesting and know how Tasha will react to it - make sure you get advice here though, from someone more expert than me before you do it. The key is that a spreadsheet with home testing numbers gives you power to be able to really manage her diabetes and hopefully get her off of insulin. Every day here some lucky kitty goes off - it's a great goal!

good job on getting the shots down - that's hard enough, isn't it?! once you master the hometesting you're gonna want a t-shirt that says "I'm Woman Hear Me Roar!" :-D just teasing you, of course. i just want to encourage you to keep on working at the testing.

doin good tested +3 267, +6 189 using the ear and geting the hang of it, only takes a few mins for that unlike the 1/2 hr or so for the paw stick.

Other news, she ate all the canned and left the dry in her bowl today silly girl

i haven't had a problem shooting her, just sticking her doing much better now. Just have to teach DH how to

Triple Yays! i'm so glad you had more luck getting the blood test poking done. you have my total sympathy - it is hard. it does get easier, but you have to muddle through it being hard for awhile.

you're doing the right thing! we're all cheering you on!!!! :-D

ps - it took my husband "helping" me for about 6 weeks til day before yesterday when i was asleep in my chair, staying up to test punkin and he went ahead and tested him. still haven't gotten him to give the insulin yet, but at least it was a step!

DH is great! All I had to do is show him once or twice and he does it on his own.

I work 12 hr shifts starting at 0630, he works 8's also at 0630 so we rotate amps and he gets the pm's when i'm not home.

Ta's ear is learning how to bleed finally, only have to stick her once instead of 2-3 times to get enough blood. FINALLY
