How much water is too much?

Hello hello! My apologies in advance if this is already well covered somewhere else. I searched the board and didn't see anything that stated specifically... So, out of curiosity, how much water is too much for a cat to drink per day? I've been measuring Bailey's intake at each shot time and he's averaging 1/2 cup of water every twelve hours (usually a little less). According to Google, that's about right for his weight, but since he's diabetic, I wanted to get the opinion of the board! I also add some water to his canned food but not much (he's been having bad diarrhea, that's a whole other issue...). Anyway, just wondering about the water. His litter box seems fine (aside from the loose stool) but occasionally I'll scoop out a huge chunk from urine, almost like it's mostly coming out at once, and then maybe only two smaller chunks.

I say that is about normal especially for the relatively high BG your SS shows in the recent past.
The diarrhea will also cause fluid loss and increase fluid needs.

Maybe cut back some on the water in the food and add a pinch of plain psyllium to the food. Psyllium is a fiber which will soak up some of the moisture and give the stool form.

Thanks! He's been getting Fortiflora with dinner for about two weeks now and there's been little to no improvement. I've cut back on the water I add to his food the last couple of days so hopefully that'll make some kind of difference. We'll probably go to the vet later this week, but I'm hoping his BG spikes are just because we've had to travel this week and that he'll get back to "normal" again soon... ;-)

Food intolerance myt cause GI issues; has any food changed?

Inflammatory bowel disease can cause diarrhea and may progress to intestinal lymphoma. Biopsy can confirm it, but risks surgical compications.


Batch production variations can cause GI issues. Check the product codes on what you're feeding. Fall is when batches may vary more due to fall slaughter.

No food changes, but I'll check out the batch numbers. Maybe he needs some kind of fiber supplement in addition to the Fortiflora? Either way, I'm afraid it's vet time. He's still drinking the same amount of water the last couple of days, even with less water added to his food, but having diarrhea for so long just isn't right, I know. I also think the insulin is just not quite working out, but that's a whole other thing, I guess. Going to do another slight increase in dose early next week and we're settled at home again and I'm around to test throughout the day
