our Tigger was diagnosed last week and seems to be doing well. We started him on the Purina DM that the vet had, but she gave us the list of low carb food that is on here, so we're switching him to Fancy Feast Classics. He did not like the DM but INHALES the FF! The Purina DM comes in 6 0z cans...on vets original advice we were giving him 1 can twice a day. Now that we've almost made the switch completely over to the FF,they are 3 oz cans, and she says 1 3oz can twice a day. So it's the same...but half of what he was getting before! Is this right? A 3oz can just doesn't seem enough! I'm still mixing with the last of the DM, but am almost ready to go solely FF Classics. Today I gave him 1/2 of a 3 oz can at lunch just to tide him over. He had been a 18 lb cat, at diagnosis was 13 lbs and still is. How much Do you feed of the Fancy Feast low carb food?

The food chart we use here shows the 5.5 oz can of DM as about 191 calories. According to that same list, the FF classics are in the 80-90 calorie range, so it looks like you'd do around 2.5 cans per day for the same amount of calories as one can a day of DM.

Take a look at the Catinfo web site, there is also a section on How Much Should I Feed. Has your vet suggested what Tigger's ideal weight should be?

Fred was 18 lbs before diagnosis (he's a big Turkish Angora) , he's now 16 lbs since switching to high protein/low carb FF classics. I've had Fred on FF classics since he was diagnosed and I've figured out that he does better when I give 1/2 can at meal/shot time , twice a day, and I leave 1/2 can out for him while I'm gone during the day....and 1/2 can again at night for his 2 am hunger pangs. So it ends up being 2 cans in 24 hours ...38/39 kcal and 3-5 carbs per can. I'll add that at one point, Fred dropped to 15.5 lbs and the vet was concerned so we added a little Diabetic dry food to his canned and when he got back to 16, I stopped the dry diabetic food cuz his BS shot up. The dry dehydrates them and even though some are diabetic foods, they are higher in carbs. No dry for Fred. Oh and I keep emergency cans of FF with gravy and have used it once when Fred dropped to BS54 and it raised his BS.
Hope Tigger does well.

this is wonderful..thank you for sharing! We are currently on a long road trip from CA to the East Coast (in TX tonight!) so it's been harder to deal with being newly diagnosed, then leaving, but we're doing it! He has to sit all day in the backseat of the truck,so he's not getting his usual exercise, but he's well. Have tested him just once since we left on Monday and he was 447 late in the day. I gave him one can of FF for dinner tonight, then he cried for more,..and I added 1/2 can. Will see how morning goes!

We stayed in Flatonia last night which is just east of San Antonio off the 10. Tigger is headed to DisneyWorld! Just gave him 1.5 can of FF. Vet said just one can per feeding and snacks...doesn't seem to be enough but we are still new at this!

I was mistaken.... I'm feeding him an average of 3 cans a day. Sometimes 2 . 5. How's he like the car ride? When I moved here ffrom Fort Worth, with Fred, I put catnip in a sock and put it in his carrier and he was pretty calm. I keep a catnip sock around all the time. It calms him. Have fun Tigger.

He's loving the trip! He travels well in our truck..always has. More like a dog He loves the FF food! We're at Disney World now....he's enjoying Florida! He still gets 1 can in morning, one at night. Sometimes 1/2 can late at night..or during wee hours if he wakes up and starts scratching our door. Or middle of day. Got more freeze dried treats today and that will help. His numbers have been stable..still high but doing well. I like your catnip suggestion!!

I'm so jealous ! His numbers will prob be a little high cuz of the riding and different environments etc. have fun !
