How much food is necessary to give before the shot? Or is food needed with Lantus? I'm assuming it is..he was on Vetsulin before, and food was required. Tigger is on a 8am-8pm schedule, but last night his shot was delayed by 1 1/2 hrs, so I'm delaying it by that much this morning, minus 15 minutes.( Will work back slowly to regular schedule). So he was up this morning at 7, and I need to delay shot to about 9:30....but he wants his breakfast! So I gave him 1 can..and am planning on 1/2 can just before his shot. Or does he need food at all?

Vet suggests 1-1 1/2 cans (FF) twice a day. He had DKA 2 weeks ago and doing great. Trying to keep his feedings just before shots. It's really been keeping him regular and his numbers have been really good and consistent.

With Lantus is is not as critical to have food in before the shot. Vetsulin acts quicker and faster which is why having food 30 minutes before the shot is necessary. Lantus generally does not start acting for about 2 hours (depending on the kitty). Most people will test, feed and shoot all within a few minutes just to make sure their kitty is going to eat.

Ok..that's what I thought. Also...another question about timing of shot. Trying to get back to regular 8am timing. Last night was 9:30....I'm thinking I read to back it up 15 minutes each day or can I do 30 min? That would mean he gets shot at 9 this morning, 9 tonight...8:30 tomorrow..and so on. Do I have this right? Thanks!!

You can do 15 minutes each shot or one change of 30 minutes in 24 hours without it causing any problems. Sometimes 30 minutes early can act like a minor dose increase so just be sure to test. :)
