Free feeding low carb food is fine. I spread out my kitty's food over the first 4 hours of each cycle. Fundamentally, as long as your cat will get the most of her calories in by the time you're reaching nadir, it should be fine.
I'd like to suggest that you read the starred, sticky notes at the top of the Board -- especially the note regarding the Tight Regulation Protocols. These are the dosing protocols that we use. From what it sounds like, you are not administering the same amount of Lantus at the AM and PM shot. Lantus is not optimally used as an insulin where you base your dose on the pre-shot test value. Because it is a long-acting insulin, dosage is based on the nadir. Further, doses are held for a specified period of time. Lantus is also meant to be dosed twice a day. If you are skipping shots because you are getting low pre-shot numbers it's possible that you may need to reduce your dose so you can shoot twice each day.
