Hi. Relatively new at this. My cat Nellie weighs 8 pounds. She free feeds on low carb Fancy Feast. We test her, feed her and give her a shot if needed, morning and night. She is regulated using Lantus, 1 - 1.5 units depending on her blood glucose reading. I persuade her, sometimes with difficulty, to eat half a can of Fancy Feast before she we give her an injection. Is this an adequate amount of food prior to an injection and considering that she eats throughout the day? I would really appreciate your opinions.

i usually drink 2 cups of coffee and have a donut or two. as far as what your cat should eat...i'll leave that to the experts!

I think you need to delete the info before the http: for the link to your SS to work - but I don't know if that will fix the problem.
Free feeding low carb food is fine. I spread out my kitty's food over the first 4 hours of each cycle. Fundamentally, as long as your cat will get the most of her calories in by the time you're reaching nadir, it should be fine.
I'd like to suggest that you read the starred, sticky notes at the top of the Board -- especially the note regarding the Tight Regulation Protocols. These are the dosing protocols that we use. From what it sounds like, you are not administering the same amount of Lantus at the AM and PM shot. Lantus is not optimally used as an insulin where you base your dose on the pre-shot test value. Because it is a long-acting insulin, dosage is based on the nadir. Further, doses are held for a specified period of time. Lantus is also meant to be dosed twice a day. If you are skipping shots because you are getting low pre-shot numbers it's possible that you may need to reduce your dose so you can shoot twice each day.

Kay~so nice to see you today. If you could follow the directions for attaching the SS to your signature, we could take a look at the numbers.
We post everyday here, starting the headier like this : Date, kitty's Name, AMPS=_________
and then we link our previous day's condo (thread) to the first post of the day. It would be great if you would join us ...there is much to learn about this FD dance. It would be so nice for us to watch Nellie's progress.
