Hi, I am new... How much food should Trixie eat before the shot? Is a tablespoon enough? And leave the rest for her to finish afterward? She is on Lanus, if that is the right name! Lol...

Thank you all!

My boy is on Lantus & he eats a half a can of fancy feast at both shot times. I test feed & shoot while he's eating. He's a 17lbs big boy.

If your cat is a grazer, it’s fine if she only eats a little bit at pre-shot time - a tablespoon is enough- and then eats other spoonsful at maybe +2 and +4 or as her numbers warrant. You want to make sure that she’s getting her overall daily calories,

Do you have a spreadsheet or written data on the tests you are getting on Trixie? It would help to find out when her onset time is, what her preshot numbers are and what her nadir is (lowest point in the cycle.).

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Are you able to give us more information about Tricia? How much Lantus is she on? when was she diagnosed? What are you feeding her? Are you giving her snacks during the cycles?

Hi, Trixie is 14, her is on Lantus, she was officially diagnosed about a week or so ago. I feed her Wellness wet food, but... have been thinking about Fancy Feast instead, as she is/was keener on that brand, but... I tried Wellness as I was perhaps overly concerned about carbs. *Is Fancy Feast okay? I will give a few freeze-dried treats. She is on 1 unit twice a day.

I haven't received my Aplhtrak 2 yet, the vet ordered it, I am in Toronto and we can't seem to buy them here unless it is through a vet. I will make one up as soon as I get it.

That is great, Fancy Feast is okay?! Good... I think Trixie knows what is up already and hides, I don't know how they seem to know they are about to get a shot! I hope it gets easier. I am a little concerned that she won't get all of her calories, she usually doesn't eat all at once, more of a grazer. Another problem is I am alone in this and my work schedule is about 12 hours long... give or take, so my window of time is rather short... I did read that one could be late by an hour or two.

Fortiflora, crumbled freeze-dried treats, warm water, or even a few seconds in the microwave can help make food more appealing - all that is totally fine!
I put all of those on her food... fingers crossed! Hoping it works. I am going to leave the remainder of the food out for her hoping she eats it within 90 mins or so, then take it away. **Is it fine to give her a few freeze-dried treats midway between her doses??

Being late by an hour or two is a problem. Shots need to be given 12 hours apart. The most that you need to be late (or early) is only 30 minutes per DAY (meaning 15 minutes in the morning and evening or 30 minutes maximum at either shot time.)

Fancy Feast is okay to give as long as it’s one of the Classic Pates. Those are the low carb ones. You can use the Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers varieties for high carb options when you need to bring up the BG and they even make some grilled varieties that are medium carb.

  1. Yes, Bron mentioned kidneys. I was just going to say that the Fancy Feast foods are rather high in Phosphorus and so are hard on the kidneys. Of course, she needs to eat! There are ways around this problem by using Phosphorus binders, if necessary But we are getting ahead of themselves! Do you have copies of the bloodwork that was done at her diagnosis? If you can share those here, we can take a look at them

. Yes it is fine to give freeze dried treats. They are so low carb. I don’t know if anyone has told you yet, but don’t give food for two hours prior to the shot time. This is so that you will be able to get a blood glucose test that is not “food influenced” and you will know if it os safe to give the insulin.

Hi, I can't seem to upload a copy of her urine analysis, but I will give you the most important stuff I guess,

ketones were negative, 4+ for glucose, urine protein negative, PH 7.0, urine was clear, straw colour, for the r and w blood cells they were both at <1 HPF, and the same for the non squamous epithelial cells, all other results were normal

The upload isn't working, you can just take a pic of it and post it here
