How many ounces of canned cat food should a cat be fed a day to maintain its current weight?
How many ounces do you feed your cats?

I have a cat (non-diabetic) that needs to gain weight, so I'd like to know the guidelines for canned food in maintaining, so I can figure out how much more to give him.
He is only 7-1/2 pounds right now. Use to be 14 lbs.
The doctor put him on a low dose of anti-thyroid medication (even tho his T4 and Free-T4 tests came out normal) because he has all the symptoms of an over active thyroid.

If he needs to gain weight, I'd say put out as much as he'll eat. I tried scheduled feedings per my vets stern advise, but quickly abandoned that when my other 3 non-diabetic cats started wolfing their food so fast then would then throw it up. Now I feed throughout the day as they want it and that seems to work great.

It is partly that "every cat is different" thing. It depends on their activity levels, whether you want them to gain or lose weight etc. We have a civie, small Russian blue who plays once a day, is an inside cat and his ideal weight at 7 pounds. We feed him 2 cans of Fancy Feast daily. We had a diabetic Maine Coon - overweight at 14 pounds. Once he was regulated and not starving, we fed him between 2-3 cans FF. He was also indoors with a very low activity level.

Thanks Sue,
He is very active, especially for a 15 yr old cat. The thyroid meds have slowed him down slightly.
Right now he is eating 3-4 FF cans a day.
My 11 yr old, large Blue Russian 18 lb cat eats 1-1/2 to 2 cans a day.
