HOW MUCH CANNED FOOD SHOULD A SEDENTARY 15 YR. CAT EAT?

If a female old cat is left with half of a can of Friskies wet food, should that be enough for 24 hours before the cat is fed again? She weighs about 7 pounds and is indoor only. She has a fountain going, and access to her litter box. She is an 'only' cat.

Thanks for any answers tonight, as I need to know whether I should drive somewhere to feed this cat before tomorrow at 10 am?

Do you have any idea how much she normally eats?
That doesn't sound like very much food.... but I'm really not an expert.

They normally feed her a total of one 5.5 oz. can of Friskies a day. No dry food at all. They feed half a can in the morning and a half a can at night around 8 pm.

She is a thin cat and does not have many teeth but otherwise seems fairly healthy for her age and size.

I tend to be an 'over feeder' so that is why it seems like such a little amount of food to me. Plus, I know I worry too much, but I just wondered what other folks would do in my situation?

It is dark, and hard for me to drive at night, so my son and dil do not like to see me driving at night and they said she should be perfectly fine until tomorrow around 10 am.

I know you're waiting for responses... and I really don't know what to tell you. I don't feel qualified to answer.

I imagine she wouldn't *starve* from now until morning. It's kind of like fasting for 12 hours before the vet.
She'll be hungry and perhaps annoyed with you.

I guess it depends how you feel about driving there at night. Certainly don't risk your life for it.
Personally, I think it would torment me and I'd just end up going, but I don't have night driving issues.

ps... I don't know how many people are online tonight, but I suspect you might get more of a response if you changed the title of your post to something that makes it sound a bit more urgent.

Hi Odiesmom,

Thanks so much for your kind responses. I was able to talk with another cat person, and she told me also what you said about how we have to have our cats 'fast' before surgeries or dentals, etc. and they don't starve to death when it is the matter of one day or so. I think Misty will be okay.

I feel better now, so I will just wait and check on her tomorrow. Someone else is stopping at 10 am to feed her, and I will probably check her in the afternoon.

Thanks so much for caring. I can't really see too well to drive late at night, and since Misty is such a little cat, she normally picks at her food anyway.

Take care!

Cuddles was always right around 7 lbs. She'd eat about one 5.5 oz can of food a day. Half in the morning, half at night. Could you leave a whole can down for her to pick at throughout the day/night? Or would the other cats eat it? I wouldn't think it would be a big deal.. she just may be a little hungrier the next morning. ;-)

Hi Steph,

This is an 'only' cat. All by herself. I feel sad for her. She originally was my dil's cat but was kept at her mother's and father's house, and they were just going to put her to sleep because she was 'in the way' and caused them allergies, so my dil and son took her to their house. But, she doesn't get much attention, and my dil's mother keeps telling my dil to just take her and put her to sleep. Poor little thing. I just feel so sorry for the cat, but I can't bring her to my house, as my 5 cats all have issues as it is, and it would upset the 'apple cart' so to speak. Here is her picture:

Awww poor thing. Glad they took her in at least. I hate when an animal isn't wanted.. and would be perfect for someone out there.. they just can't find each other. I feel that way especially about Misha & Cher. I was Cher's last chance before being PTS.. and Misha was returned twice. One more time, and they seriously look at whether they're adoptable or not. (3 strikes kind of thing) I was her 3rd adopter, and she's obviously home. I'm glad she was returned twice so I could find her!

This is what made her catch my eye! lol

I was a dog volunteer at the time when she was returned (I didn't know she was returned at the time). She was a longtimer, but it was before my time. I'd take her out into a yard at the shelter to exercise, and go around the corner to get some more toys or a brush or something. (A yard w/ a door LOCKED for a dog.) She'd come running around the corner to find me! She did it 2-3 times, and I had NO idea how she got out of the yard each time! (Door was still locked!) LOL She obviously knew it was meant to be before I did. ;-)
