Hi all, I must say when I seen the my glucometer flash 237 I was ecstatic. This is the best he has been. I don't quite know how much I should give. I just started him on 2 units of lantus on Monday June 8, 2020 as he was newly diagnosed at the emergency vet. I am not sure if the insulin depot has had time to fill....etc. I am afraid if I give him the two units he be drop. He does eat FF pates and I still have dry food out for him but he eats a few morsels here and there as I haven't started weaning him off just yet. His spreadsheet is attached. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! btw this was about 20 minutes after he ate the ff pate and did not eat all of it.

You need to test the blood glucose before you feed any food.
Otherwise the BG will be influenced.by the food.
Also I would recommend you start getting some tests on durimg the PM cycle as it is just as important.
Always try and get a before bed test done and if it is lower than the preshot you may need to set the alarm and get up and test later to see the BG hasn't dropped too low. Cats often drop lower at night.
Two units is a larger amount of insulin than normal. One unit is the usual starting dose.

Do you have plenty of test strips, high carb food and honey if needed and can you monitor the cycle all this cycle.?
If yes, than I think you can give the dose of insulin. However I won't be able to check on you as I am just heading to bed.
Get a +2 so you know what is happening and test during the cycle as well.

sure Aleluia.... Thank you for the helpful information Bron. I am still new to this spreadsheet and trying to get everything recorded correctly. I chose to hold the Lantus this morning and i rechecked him at 1pm and he was BS 427. So around a month ago I took Max to the vet as i observed him drinking more water and peeing large amounts and when I picked him up he just didn't seem to weigh as much. When I took him last month he had lost about 3 pounds in 3 years. We lost his sister a little over 2 years ago and although they did not play together I don't think he has been quite the same since. He has always had a good bill of health. Last month I took him to my local vet. His bloodwork was perfect so she she suggested an ultrasound. His ultrasound showed ibd vs lymphoma. So she prescribed prednisolone 7.5mg at a tapered dose. She also done an echocardiogram and only showed mild HCM, (btnp was only 3 points higher than the norm). So I started giving him the prednisolone. I could not tell a difference either way b/c he never had any nausea or vomiting the entire time. He was eating as normal but a little more picky. I was a little skeptical of the diagnosis. She prescribed him the prescription diet wet food high energy and the prescription diet hydrolyzed protein dry food. Thinking maybe this would help if he had IBD. She said if it was lymphoma...obviously it would be the small-cell because he is doing so well and that treatment for both would be similar since I did not want to put him through a biopsy. So around a week ago, something told me to check his blood sugar, bc the water and urinating continued. (mind you he has been on the prednisolone now for a month.....7.5mg bid, 7.5mg once daily and then 7.5 every other day which he was on up until a week ago. I thought the increased drinking and urinating maybe was from the prednisolone but then again he was doing this before ever starting on the pred. He would eat the wet food but would only eat little bits at the time. It was a shocking 656. I immediately held his dose of pred and took him straight to the emergency room. They prescribed him lantus 2 units bid. I changed his wet food to fancy feast pates and have been giving him two to three a day. He doesn't eat it all at one time so I leave it out throughout the day and he snacks on it. I also still have the dry food (bad I know:( ) prescription diet HP out also because he has always been a grazer. I usually put 60 grams in his bowl but he eats no where close to this. I hope this helps. So currenly he is taking no other meds. I have stopped them all (she had him on pred, cerenia, mirtazepine ). It seemed like it made him feel worse. This morning he was 237 i held his am dose and checked him at 130 and he was 427.

It is going to be hard for me bc he needs to gain about two pounds. It's going to be balancing the blood sugars with increasing his calories to gain weight. He is 12.66 now. He use to weigh almost 17 pounds years ago.
He has some muscle wasting around his hip area(hind legs) but he still has a belly on him.
