How many calories to avoid FATTY LIVER???

Robbie is having a very tough time since his dental yesterdy. He had 8 teeth extracted-- 6 of those very difficult to remove. Since Thursday evening he has only eaten about 1/8th can of a/d made very soupy... so about 36 hours.

He had no insulin yesterday because of fears of him hypoing from the anesthesia and then he didn't eat anything until about midnight. This morning I gave him only 1u (bg 315) even though he didn't eat. He's been getting buprinex also. Robbie's jaw and chin are very swollen and there's still some bloody drool. He seems to want to eat, but can't.

Being an overweight diabetic, I'm worried about fatty liver. Any idea how many calories I need to get into him in order to avoid this? I do have a call into my vets, but in the meantime any advise?

It's very difficult to worry about Robbie and grieve for Greta at the same time. I was so, so happy to be able to bring him home last night... while crying so hard because I'd taken two kitties in that morning, yet was only bringing one home...

Youre heart is soooooo full right now. I am sorry for your loss and your worries. :sad:

I would think each cat is going to be individual calorie-wise.
As someone who had a cat who was very difficult to get eating for years, I understand the concern. Both regular vet and IM vet said it would become an emergency (for her) if she did not eat for 24hrs. That seemed like a long time. I would start syringe feeding if she was flat out refusing food for about 12hrs. Tho that could vary depending on the circumstances

I wonder how painful syringe feeding would be with the extractions???? Is that an option?
Have you tried baby food...meat only/no onions? Gerber has cornstarch in it, but its more bang for the jar calorie wise.
Can you spoon feed it, or just stick some on your finger and put it in his mouth?

I know you have been around a long time, and had lots of cats ....I dont want to tell you things you already know about assist feeding and have you want to bang your head against the desk. :lol: Do let me know if you need other suggestions or support in that arena.

When Doodle had his last two dentals he went 4 or 5 days eating only very soupy baby food - I think he ate maybe 1 jar a day. There was just no way to go near his swollen mouth with a syringe. He wasn't really overweight though so I understand the concern is even more since Robbie is. A/d obviously has a lot more calories but maybe you mix some baby food in or drizzle it on top if you think it might wake his taste buds up.

is there any way to get his inflammation down? I know most people here avoid metacam like the plague but....we've never had post dental issues like inappetance thank goodness....
 
Thanks for the replies everyone--- and Carolyn (you spell your name funny! lol), don't worry that I've been around for a while here, there's always something new to learn.

Anyway, Robbie has started to eat better. Yesterday he ate 1/2 can a/d and a full FF can. He's nibbled a bit this morning, but nothing near normal. I know there isn't a "one size fits all" answer to this but hearing from others always helps. His vet said to just offer him anything and if he'll eat the a/d go for that since it's so calorie dense. He's still getting buprinex and it does seem to help.

Jen, if the swelling doesn't go down by tomorrow, I'll call his vet again. I may call today because he's drooling and still gulping.

I'm sure a lot of my reaction to all of this was panic... almost lost him to a severe hypo a few weeks ago... then lost Rex to a clot ... then Greta on Friday... it's just too much.
