How low is too low to give insulin?

I couldn't update Cricket's numbers from my phone but she was 288 last night and 145 this morning. She was given her regular dose because my mom took the morning shift so I could sleep in. I checked her before I left for work +3 at 160. I left my mom with strict instructions to test throughout the day because I don't want Cricket to drop too low. Unfortunately, she has to be out of the house from about +7 to +10 or +11. She will be giving Cricket her evening dose because I will be at work. How low is too low to give insulin? Cricket has never been below 200. It's exciting but nerve wracking at the same time. I'm super concerned about her today but her numbers have been dropping every day. I would think her dose should be decreased dramatically if it is the same this evening as it was this morning. Thank you.

Deep breaths. It should be fine. Have your mom get a +1 and +2 and post the results. Feed Cricket a little of her regular food at each test. If she starts dropping someone will tell her whether to give some middle or high carb food or karo. Lantus usually reaches nadir (lowest point) by +7 but since this is a new low she may need some high carb food to keep her safe. Let's see what happens.

I noticed you aren't testing after pmps. Many cats go lower at night. My Max was one of those. Had I not tested at night he would have either gotten too much insulin or gone hypo. Had you gotten a before bed test you might have caught that happening. If you get a +11 you can see what might happen at amps.

There's no easy answer to your question. Experienced people with lots of data will shoot anything over 50 provided they can monitor if necessary and have all necessary supplies such as test strips, karo or honey, high carb food and lancets or needles.

Any update from your mum with todays tests? good that you got a test before heading out 163 is up a bit from her amps, so hopefully you mum wont have had to deal with anything too dramatic.

There isn't a straight answer for your question about how low is too low really. Over time and when data ready those of us following tr will shoot anything over 50.
If she gives you a lower than normal pmps, tonight and you shoot, you really need to at least get a +1 and a +2, and then depending on those numbers you'll need to make a call on whether she needs more monitoring((we can help you with that)

I agree with Elise, it would be very sensible to get at least one test at night, even if that's just one before you hit the sack.

Excited to see those blues... looking forward to seeing their pretty colours on her ss.:cool::cool:

I will be home by her +1 tonight. I generally don't get a number after her nightly shot because I go to bed shortly after. Basically, I get up at 5:30, take my son to the bus, get Cricket's AMPS, feed, shot, go to work. Sometimes I don't get home until 6:30pm so my mom takes the night readings, feedings and dose. I come home, eat, check on my son and go to bed around 8-8:30. It's been a stressful few weeks. Today my mom won't be able to check Cricket during her peak times because she gets my son from school (35 minutes away) and drives him to occupational therapy (40 minutes away), stays there for an hour and then back home (30 minutes away depending on traffic). She just checked Cricket's numbers at +5 and she's at 162. Unfortunately, I can't update the spreadsheet from my phone. I asked her to leave out a little bit of kitten chow just in case.
