I am currently using PROZINC for my diabetic cat. There seems to be conflicting information out there as to the amount of time the potency and quality of prozinc lasts after it is punctured. I called the manufacturer ( twice) and I got two different answers. One is until the exp date and the other one was three months. The vet's office seems to be confused as well. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas? I also had a terrible vet visit yesterday. My vet says that I NEED to feed her Purina DM ( dry and wet ) and I told him the dry is too high in carbs I am not comfortable with that and also can't afford it. After hours of online research she gets Friskies, Fancy Feast or Sheba. He was very annoyed and wrote me off!! Gotta find a new vet!!

There's no pat answer for the "how long will it last" question....but if you're home testing, if the numbers start to creep up and there's no other explanation, it's time to suspect the insulin is going bad.

Generally though, it should last 3-6 months if it's cared for properly.

There are lots of us that are dealing with this disease on our own after problems with vets. Good for you though for sticking to your guns and not caving in!! There's absolutely nothing special about those prescription foods (but the price!)

Your kitty is beautiful!! Of course I have a special place in my heart for white kitties!!

Wow your vet sounds like an ass. Most insulin lasts 4-6 months refrigerated. I always got a new vial at 4 month. If it's kept in the door it might last 3. If you notice a rise in numbers it may be time for a new bottle

What is her/his name?

That's China....she's almost 19 years old and has been diabetic for over 5 years.

If you look under our comments, you'll see our "Signature"....it will help us to help you if you'll do yours too. Just click on your sign on name at the top right and choose "Signature"....a new box will pop up for you to enter information in like:

Your name/cats name, age, sex, date of diagnosis, type of insulin, type of meter, type of food, any other health problems or medications? and a general location.

That way we don't have to keep asking the same questions!!

Also, we have a Spreadsheet we all use here. It's color coded which really helps us see the "patterns of action" we look for. Here are the Instructions on getting the FDMB spreadsheet but if you have any trouble, feel free to send me a PM and I'll be happy to set it up for you. Just click on my name and choose "start conversation"

Welcome to the FDMB!! The best place you never wanted to be!!
