The manufacturer says 28 days after opening regardless of the expiration date.

I keep mine refrigerated.

How long will it really remain effective? I have read all kinds of things.

Is there some data on this other than from the manufacturer?

I’ve never had insulin in the pen go bad. It usually takes about 2 months for us to use up the whole thing. The 28 days the manufacturer recommends is meant for humans who carry it around in a purse or pocket and don’t refrigerate.

You can keep using the pen until it is gone. The biggest advantage of using the pens is there is very little insulin that is wasted. Use a U100 syringe instead of the pen needles. Depending on your dose, most packages of pens will provide enough insulin for 9-12 months or possibly longer

There is no information from the manufacturer because Lantus or any of the generics do not have in indication for cats. Using Lantus with pets is an off-label use. I would use a pen until it was finished which was typically 3 months given Gabby's dose.
