I was assuming that Lucy's ProZinc would be safe to use until the expiration date on the vial. Which is 7/2014. Of course it will be used up way before then, but is it true that it loses potency after just a couple of months? I punctured this vial for the first time 12/19/12.

Joan,
Only last week? If so, it's gotta still be good, I would think. Can you go to the prozinc website and send them an email?

My vials usually last 4-6 months. As long as it looks the same (no "floaters") & stays refrigerated, it's theoretically good until it expires. It can go bad sooner (officially, you have a month after it's opened), but typically it's "good to the last drop."

I'm not worried about this particular vial. Just in general. Arè we supposed to replace the bottle after X amount of days, weeks, or months after breaking the seal and puncturing it?

It's probably EVID - every vial is different. As long as the numbers are consistent, as Lisa said, no floaties, the vial is presumed to be fine. Some people use it to the last drop; some may decide a vial is losing its punch and not bringing the numbers down, and so switch out before it's completely gone.

I decided to phone ProZinc. Had to navigate through just two phone trees, and

Whoops, Holy Toledo, typo: I punctured it 9/19/12. Can you imagine having to buy a ninety dollar vial once a week? Second mortage, here we come.
I decided to call the company that manufactures ProZinc. I was told that if stored correctly, ProZinc is stable and good until the expiration date on the bottle. A tech at the vet's office set me on edge, telling me I should replace the bottle after a couple of months. The rep at ProZinc said human insulin needs to be discarded within 30 - 60 days, maybe that was what the confusion was all about.
Don't know why I was so reluctant to call the company myself and ask, but I'm glad I did.
