How long are unused Levemir pens good for?

I purchased two boxes of Levemir pens in January. Max's dose has lowered since then and I haven't been going through it as fast so I have another box left that expires in 2023. I hate to waste all of that insulin that's not even been opened yet but I've already had it 6 months. A pharmacy tech told me it was good until the exp date. I've read some place else up to 6 months. So which is it?
 
As long as the pen hasn't been "pierced" and it's been kept in the fridge, it's good until at least the expiration date (and honestly, usually even longer)

The 6 months time frame is more for pens that have been "opened"
