How do I check for ketones?

Riley was diagnosed over 3 weeks ago with diabetes at the time his BS numbers were over 600, (with no ketones as of that point in time) he was anemic and had a severe UTI. He also has IBD. With the help of this awesome forum I have a better understanding of how to chk BS myself and Sue is helping me with his numbers and dosage. I have him on 1 unit Prozinc daily and this seems to be better form 2.5 vet recommended. Although he is on antibiotics and he's lost weight from drastic diet changes since then. Now my next hurdle is learning how to test for ketones. His numbers move around alot so I'm not really sure what his range is yet. He has gone over 300 a few times one day it was 411. Do I wait for him to pee and try to hold it over his urine???? That sounds so hard to do.
 
Cats often eliminate within 20-30 minutes after eating. That is the most likely time to be successful following the cat! A long handled serving spoon can help, or as noted, taking a strip of plastic wrap and crumpling it around the perimeter of the box.
 
I just started doing this this week. I bought the blood ketone checker ($30) + 10 test strips ($30). I had no intention of checking her pee, mostly because I've never in over a year seen her actually use the litter box (she's very sneaky and private about it), and we also have 2 other cats. The blood checker works great and easy.

The one I got was Precision Xtra NFR off Amazon and the test strips off eBay.
 
Actually saw him peeing and held stick and he peed on it. The color was negative. Is that okay or does it have to be more urine?
 
If I didn't know better (which I don't) I'd say that is about as perfect as a scenario as you can get. Someone with more experience with that will know better.
