Hi all,

I am new here, and I am based in Ireland. Most of the foods I see in our local pet stores are not on the UK foods list (except for the widely available ones like Sheba and Whiskas).

Is there a way for me to estimate that % of calories from carbs based on the info on the packaging? This way I'd know whether the foods I'm seeing are suitable for my cat.

(Our vet suggests Royal Canine Diabetic, both the dry one and the wet one in gravy. I already saw here that these are quite high in carbs).

Thank you!

I enjoyed hearing about your 'Six Dinner Sid' in your introductory post. :)

On the packaging you'll find the 'as fed' analytical constituents for the foods you're interested in:

* Protein
* Fat
* Crude Fibre
* Crude Ash
* Moisture

Here is the thread from our FAQ section to help you do the carb calculations:

Calculating % Calories from Carbs

Also there are links to a couple of carb calculators in the following post:

It's handy to create an additional tab in your spreadsheet where you can add the info on Kabosu-san's foods.

When you've worked out the carb values for the foods available locally, also look for a couple that are around the 15% and 20% mark - ideally ones that have gravy - and get a small supply of each for your hypo toolkit. A tub of Temptations treats (>30% kcals from carbs) is also another useful thing to have in the toolkit. (These higher carb foods can be used to raise and steer BG levels if a kitty is running low.)

Arigato gozaimasu! :joyful:

This is great. I just went to the closest supermarket and calculated carbs in all the foods, so nice to finally understand what formula is being used. I picked a few wet ones that were around 5%!

Hi, I think you have a Zooplus in Ireland to buy online from? So most of the foods in the first section on the UK list 'should' be available to you, and that could give you a lot more options. :)

Yes, I ordered a few of them now. Let's see how they'll work for my baby Kabosu! Thank you!
