Is there anyone who has dealt with hot spots on their cats? Aiden has one that is painful for me to even look at. Our journey with this issue began in August, when it appeared he had a small laceration on his leg. I took him to the vet, who shaved the area to get a good look. She gave me some ointment to put on it and sent us on the way. The laceration started perhaps a half inch across- it looked as if he'd fallen against something sharp and cut his leg. However...it only grew bigger, and bigger, and bigger. Now, the area is a full 5-6 inches long and 2-3 inches across of raw, red skin. He constantly licks and licks and chews and chews. It is absolutely breaking my heart, as I know it must hurt him/be itchy.
We have tried a cone. He fights, first off, when trying to get it on. When we do manage to get it on, he slings it off. We tried to put a baby onesie on him. We've never managed to get it on because he fights so hard. We have tried a topical ointment, mousse, and liquid. We have tried giving him gabapentin. He refuses to eat the food it is mixed in and drools the mixture of medicine/water out of his mouth. I am at an absolute loss.
If it would help to see pictures, please let me know and I will provide them. They are rather awful
I've just spent over 200 dollars to order compounded gabapentin and antibiotics. I'm praying he'll actually eat them. My vet recommended sending him to a specialist, as she thinks he may be chewing due to a nerve issue related to his diabetes.
Have any of you experienced this with your cats before? What helped? Thank you so much.

Wish I had something more constructive to offer than a virtual hug.
