At +3 Jasper got into the dog's kennel and peed on his blanket. She likes to sleep in that spot why would she do that? It smelled horrible. I checked her # and it was 178.

I don't have any sticks to test for it. And I really can't afford a vet visit or get a day off of work.

Sara, could it just be the combination of her urine on the dogs blanket? And Urine does smell worse on fabric than in liter...or water.
I would'nt get all upset about that yet. I really think it's the cloth.

Well I just washed the dog's blankets yesterday but they do tend to stay smelly. I'll just keep an eye on her I guess.

Try adding some baking soda along with the detergent to help get a fresher doggie bed or people clothes. And you can put vinegar in the rinse cycle -- doesn't make anything smell like vinegar when it's done washing but also helps deodorize and sanitize and soften. Kitty pee generally smells like ammonia which is awful. Is that what it smelled like? That plus doggie smell is probabaly what you're smelling like Lori said.

Sara,
I'm with everyone else. Kitty pee stinks. The only thing that confuses me is why she'd pee in a place she likes to sleep. Had she ever peed anywhere near that spot before? I know in the past when we had too many kitties and not enough boxes, if one cat would pee on a throw rug or someplace like that, even after washing the rug and cleaning the whole area, we'd get repeat offenses days later for no apparent reason. I know they can smell a heck of a lot better than we humans can. Could be, if she's ever done that before, that she still smells pee even though you might not smell it?
On a different note, what type of litter do you use, and have you switched brands lately?

You can get the ketone sticks at any pharmacy. They're not very expensive, and, assuming you can get a sample, not hard to use. (It's getting a urine sample that's tricky.) Although, with low numbers like that I don't think ketones are an issue, but it's a good idea to check periodically anyway. Believe me, a DKA episode can be expensive.

It didn't smell like normal kitty pee. I don't know how to describe it. She's never peed there before. I'll try adding baking soda and vinegar next time. Used the same kind of litter forever and I even walked in on her peeing in the litter box this morning. I don't understand why she did it.

Are you sure it was her?
Could it have been your other cat??
My vet told me Civvie Slappy's pee was smelling more than normal because she was dehydrated. Not to try to worry you, but that is what they said???????????

Before you use detergent, soap, or bleach:

- If its carpet or furniture, blot firmly with a towel to soak up as much as you can, then spritz with water, then repeat a few times (blot/spritz), followed by a heavy spray of an enzyme product such as Nature's Miracle. Cover with plastic to keep the enzymes moist and thus active.

- If its a washable item, rinse out as much as you can with water, wring it to remove excess water, then douse it in an enzyme product such as Nature's Miracle and put aside in bucket or wrapped in plastic to keep the enzymes active.

Wait a good day to let the enzyme product work.

Uncover/unwrap and repeat the appropriate preceeding process, or then use another cleaner of some sort if the odor seems to be eliminated.

I did this with an apartment carpet that a former tenant's cats had saturated with pee, all around the perimeter. Rolled back the carpet, treated the back of it, covered in plastic, and 2 days later, odor much improved and less likely to come up during high humidity (thank goodness!).

I had a cat that had bladder stones and was peeing in inappropiate places. It was a male cat though. Also was spraying urine and he was neutered.

When Charlie was early in his diagnosis, his pee smelled AWFUL!!! It was like a super-sweet vinegary smell and it made me want to vomit. It was even worse since I was pregnant and my sense of smell is super sensitive when I'm pregnant. It went on like that until he was more regulated. He never has stinky pee anymore. 178 is a decent number, hopefully Jasper is getting somewhere and the inappropriate urination will decrease. I second the keto-stix. They are pretty cheap and you get a lot in a bottle. They are just over the counter from the pharmacist (or even just in front of the counter by the diabetic supplies). Walmart has them, so does CVS (are cvs's everywhere? i don't know). A couple pharmacies by me didn't carry them, but said they could order them in for the next day.

Re: Horrible smelling urine/inappropriate urination

I know this is an old thread, but I was looking for "inappropriate urination" and found it. This is so odd, because my boy Chester has started peeing out of the litterbox, He has peed on the carpet and our dog's bed where he likes to sleep like this cat Charlie did! I can't figure out why he would do that. The first time I discovered the pee in Lola the dog's bed it smelled vile. Had to wash it three times to get it out, and could still smell it. I coated it with Lysol spray and left it outside. Meanwhile. got Lola a new bed. At this point we weren't sure who the culprit was, but my husband suggested we put the dog's bed in our walk in closet during the day and if it got peed in we'd know it was Lola. She only sleeps in it at night. We were doing that and no pee. Yesterday I forgot to close the closet at one point and went in there later and boom, there was pee in the new bed!! More than that, I had brought in the old bed and just put it on the washing machine til I decided what I wanted to do with it, (I feed the cats on the dryer to keep the dog out of it) and when I took the new bed in there to wash it there was a fresh pee in the old bed! What the heck is going on? Then this morning I saw Chester pee on the floor. So as soon as the vet opens I'm calling to get an appointment. Funny thing though, usually his pee has no smell at all except the first time I found it in that bed. The pee on the carpet had no smell. My cleaning tip for pee on the carpet is to soak up the pee and then pour a vinegar and water mixture on it, then put towels on it with books or something heavy on it to soak it back up. My brother who owns a carpet cleaning business suggests this method to get rid of smell.

So how did this situation with Charlie turn out? Did you figure out what the problem was?
