Hi, I have been reading a lot on the website and trying to learn my way around and absorb the wealth of information. I did my Hershey's profile; I realize now I should have done that earlier. Well, this is only my second post so hopefully I'll get the hang of it soon.

Anyway, I am planing to do some shopping tomorrow for all needed supplies including home testing, treats, etc.
I was going thru the list of treats http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9172 I was directed to before. I've tagged a couple different ones to order tomorrow.

One thing that occurred to me is whether some people make their own? Is it just a matter of convenience in buying premade or is there a particular reason why not? I was just thinking I could just cook some plain chicken breast (no oil, salt or spices), cut into small strips or chunks and flash freeze. Once frozen I would wrap properly and then just pull out a few every night so they are ready for next day. Honestly I have never been one to give my cat "people" food so I've no idea if he would eat it but I guess it's worth a try and no waste if he hates it. I suppose if it's the crunchy texture they like, then the freeze dried would be much better. My kitty has never been given treats of any kind (he started gaining weight early on so I didn't think I should give him extra calories) so I've no idea what he will like.

On the other hand, maybe the freeze dried products are raw? Guess I should check that out.

If anyone has any thoughts, let me know.

Thank you
Angelica

Freezing your own treats is perfectly fine. Several folks here do that.

And some cats really go for raw; each cat is different (ECID).

Thanks!
I did a quick read of some of the product links and so far it seems the chicken products are cooked before freezing drying so that makes sense.
I will try this tomorrow since my Amazon order won't be here until Monday or Tuesday and I want to get him started on home testing over the weekend.
We'll see how it goes!

I use the freeze dried chicken - looks like its cooked to me. My cats both love it. I tried the liver and one likes it, the other doesn't. I buy the big dog bags and break the pieces up a bit and they love it!
