I did my first home test today on Pip! We are using a human meter (onetouch ultra) because my mom is diabetic and she can get it all through insurance! I fed her at 4:30pm today but did not shoot because I was running out the door and was worried that her dose might be too high (1 unit 2x a day) I just got home 6 hours after food and tested her and her BG was 93. Is that normal for food and no shot? Now I’m very worried her dose is too high or could it be for some other reason? I plan on during a home curve Sunday because it’s one of the only days I’m home all day.

Since you are using Vetsulin that would certainly be too low a number to give a shot. From your intro you said that Pip was diagnosed 10 months ago and started on 2 units of Vetsulin twice a day. At the curve you had done you said that dose took her far too low, so it is good that you dropped the dose.

Home testing is the best way to get a good picture on what is happening with your Pip. Good for you to have started...this is the safest way to know what you should be doing. Also your vet had suggested DM dry, which you chose not to use. Again, good for you to change to a low carb wet food.

Do you have any other glucose readings from the vet...when Pip was diagnosed, or any other tests the vet did? Kitties can often have higher glucose readings at the vet because of stress. If Pip had any sort of infection at the time of diagnosis this can also raise glucose numbers. The best thing you can do is to continue with your home testing and post for advice on whether it is safe to shoot or not. Doing a curve on Sunday will give some valuable information. Congrats on your first test. I don't know if the dose is too high or changes to food, ect have had a major impact. It's obviously too low to shoot this time. I'll be curious to see what the morning reading is.

Thank you! To make a long story short Pip grew up in my parents house with me with a dog (which so loves) and two cats (which she tolerates) but right around the time of diagnosis we moved out on our own. My parents lived in a quiet neighborhood and I moved to a downtown area with much more noise. I originally brought her in because she was peeing in her sleep and it had no urine smell. Blood work all came back fine but the elevated BG. The two follow ups came back elevated too. I’ll request the records today but I’m wanting to say high 200s.

I gave her a morning test before food and it was 104 so no shot for now and countinued testing. If I take her in it’s just going to come back elevated.

If you can get copies of the initial bloodwork and urinalysis plus any any additional tests that would help to fill in some pieces of the puzzle.

How is Pip's eating, peeing and drinking? If you changed her diet to all wet low carb when she was diagnosed that could be playing an important role in getting the numbers back into good ranges.

I am going to work on getting all her past paperwork today.

She eats great, urine has been completely normal, I never see her drink anything but it’s out there for her. She runs around and plays and acts totally normal.

The normal drinking and peeing is a good sign that glucose numbers are in a good range. When is the last time she was at the vets other than the first curve they tried to do?

she very well could be diet controlled. If it stays under 120 for 2 weeks she would be considered to be in remission. Good luck! Keep testing though.
