Hi everyone!

I had a quick question regarding home testing. What is the ideal time to test BG after a meal? 15 minutes? 30 minutes? An hour? Thank you!

<3 I'm still a newbie --- just wanted to offer support and say good for you for home testing!

obviously you test at shot time.....

our favorite next test around here is the +2.....
if there is a significant drop from the preshot number, it generally indicates a likely active cycle where you should be prepared to test
more often.

It also helps to know your cat's patterns so random tests are good if you don't get a drop....
This is where setting up a spreadsheet is a very helpful tool..... for asking advise and for you to see the patterns.

If you need help setting up the sheet, there are some here who will help you by doing it for you. Just ask.

What would you consider a "significant drop"?

Thanks HyperJMA, that's very sweet. I just figured out the process yesterday really out of necessity! TJ went in for a curve and was hypo without symptoms. Her numbers have been normal over the last day and a half without insulin (79, 149, 128).

Thanks rhiannon, that makes sense. I guess I was not sure if 15 minutes after a meal was long enough for the food to hit her blood sugar, but I guess it is if that is the same time insulin is normally administered. I just wanted to be sure I'm giving TJ's doctor good numbers. I will look into setting up that spreadsheet!

most foods take 30 minutes to change the numbers..... ( dry food can take longer and take longer to drop down again)

a significant drop would be 400 to 200 or even 200 to 100.....
if it's only 20 or 30 lower, that would just be normal..... and with meter variance, roughly the same numbers... such as from 100 to 85.....

if you shot an 80 bg and 2 hours later, they were at 50.... that would count as a significant drop plus the fact that you are right on the 50
and there are still hours to go for the cycle....
I'd monitor that one....for sure....

I have not given TJ insulin since Sunday evening and she has had normal numbers all week. This morning I fed her (Purina DM dry food.. still trying to make the switch to wet) and checked her BG one hour later. She was 84 (Alphatrak 2 monitor). I know this number is within the ideal range, but is this a good number following a meal?
