I came home from work early today, and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon with my kitties. Murphy got her usual every other day sub q's, but after she ate dinner, I looked at her and her side was wet. I cloth dried it, but when I looked at it - it is a completely opened wound, like she had torn the skin and fur off, over the size of a 50 cent piece. Superficial skin, not a deep wound, not bleeding and no pus, just a little wet.

Is this common - it's almost like a hot spot! Help, somebody!

Is it where the sub-q fluids were administered?

I would try and keep it clean and keep her from messing with it and get her to the vet in the am. The only thing I can think of doing is make a tube out of an old t-shirt and slide it over her - probably it would have to have some way of fastening around her chest. Maybe a tube with a slit for each front leg about 4" from one end and parallel to the neck opening/end of tube. I don't know if putting neosporin on it would be a good idea or not.

I have not heard of this happening except as result of an injury (getting in a fight, getting caught on something) or from a disease that makes the skin fragile, like Cushings (I think that is one of the symptoms).

I would consult the vet on this. Fragile skin and an open wound like this could be suspicious for Cushing's Disease. Have you noticed any other Cushingoid signs of thin or fragile skin, bald patches, thinning hair or poor haircoat, pot belly or muscle wasting?

Took her to the vet this a.m. so they could monitor her while I was at work, had our appointment at 3:30 today. It's definitely a wound from an injury, we decided most likely from trying to get onto the countertop and she may have fallen. It was the first layer of skin, nothing connective tissue related, etc., so she had staples and we stapled the skin into a flap because the wound will hopefully heal better. She gets a rinse of an antiseptic twice per day and has the e-collar on (she is not enjoying)!

I never give her fluids in the same spot - and it wouldn't have anything to do with a laceration on the side of her belly. You are only supposed to give sub q's on either the right or left side of the top of the back before the scruff of the neck.

She's doing pretty well, although the collar is going to drive her nuts. She is walking backwards - it's sort of funny!

Brief update on my little girl. She went to the vet yesterday and they ended up folding the wound over because of the size and she got staples. I don't know anything about healing wounds and feline diabetes, but I'm hopeful, keep all fingers crossed, that this will be just a little bump in the road.

She hates the e-collar!
Happy New Year!

I don't know if it will work for a cat, but for my Cairn terriers with skin issues, I put a baby onesie on them. Just cut a place for the tail. They aren't crazy about it but they get used to it and it is much better tolerated than the dreaded E-collar!

Happy New Year to Everyone!

That is a terrific idea. Although Murphy will not be crazy about that I'm sure, it certainly is better than the E collar. She is having a hard time getting used to having to clean herself after eating. I just don't want her licking or biting at those staples. Eventually, this is going to itch, I'm sure.
