Rather than post every day about his numbers, I figured I'd have one thread from now until it's "official." If that's not Kosher, someone please let me know. :)

This morning I have to call the vet and let her know how the curve went over the weekend.

Hi, Sabrina ~

No rules here. One thread is perfect for you and Hobbs, Sabrina. And, hey, 75 or 72...what great numbers either way!

So excited for you both, Sabrina!

Eva

Great job, Sabrina, and way to go, Hobbs! Y'all are doing wonderfully and hopefully there's an OTJ party in your near future. Yaay!~

Thanks all. The first day he was wholly under 120 was last Wednesday the 18th, so if he holds for 2 weeks, his OTJ party would be February 2nd (Groundhog Day).

I just talked to the vet. She says she’s happy about his numbers being low, but is concerned about some of them being too low, but isn’t sure why that would happen since he’s not getting insulin. So she’s going to consult with the internist and let me know if they need to take a closer look at his pancreas or what. Fun.

Specifically she was concerned about his numbers getting into the 50s. I kind of wanted to tell her "Well maybe he's fudging hungry in the middle of the day." Ugh. She said to not do the 4 meal a day thing but to give him a mid day meal. I'm kind of annoyed. We'll see how this goes. She's not the one being woken up at 3 in the morning by a hungry cat!!!

Re: Hobbs' Potential HM Thread - Vet Update

Are you using one of the meters made for humans v. one for animals? If so, you could mention that to the vet. I've been told to subtract 30 points from my AlphaTrak readings to get the equivalent to what a human meter would read (for example, a 100 on my A/T might be closer to a 70 or 80 on a Relion or other human meter). So, if you're using a human meter, the #s might have read higher on a meter designed for animals, which is most likely what the vet is using and the level of readings she is used to seeing or hoping to see. (I hope I explained that so it makes sense!)

Re: Hobbs' Potential HM Thread - Vet Update

Hmm. I hadn't thought of that. But yes, I use a Bayer Contour USB.

Re: Hobbs' Potential HM Thread - Vet Update

Hi, Sabrina ~

Hobbs is fine! One of our nondiabetic cats tests in the 40s all the time on a human meter. Another tests in the 50s. If you take a survey on FDMB, Sabrina, I think you'll find that it's normal for nondiabetic cats to test in the 50s on human meters. Please don't worry about Hobbs...he's doing great!

Re: Hobbs' Potential HM Thread - Vet Update

I ran a curve on my one civie Lady Jane Grey the other day just to see what a normal cat look liked, she stayed pretty much between 41-47 depending on how close I tested her to right after she ate...So he is fine at the levels he is.

"She said to not do the 4 meal a day thing but to give him a mid day meal. I'm kind of annoyed. We'll see how this goes. She's not the one being woken up at 3 in the morning by a hungry cat!!!" -- Not sure what your vet's thinking is on this, Sabrina. But if Hobbs were my cat, I'd continue with the 4 meals a day or whatever works best for you and Hobbs.

Re: Hobbs' Potential HM Thread - Vet Update

Gargh!!!!

I called the vet's office back about the human meter being lower than the alpha track issue. I left a message since of course the vet is busy and she called me back. I answered but the phone said I missed it and of course it went right to VM. She must have misunderstood what I meant or the message I left with the receptionist wasn't clear because she said "Yeah if you have an alpha track that's pretty accurate..." ohmygod_smile She's out tomorrow too. I wish I had her email address, that would be easier than playing telephone. Literally.

He's at 72 this morning. For real this time. I decided to keep with the 4 meals/day which meant he got a meal overnight and thus didn't wake me up. Yay! Yesterday I had a dream that I was lecturing someone about why dry food was bad for cats.

Hi, Sabrina ~

Love that 72 for Hobbs...and for you! Looking good.

"Yesterday I had a dream that I was lecturing someone about why dry food was bad for cats." -- :-D That's the kind of lecture we all should be giving, I think.

Take care,
Eva

Go HobbsBaby Go!

I also did a curve on one of our non-diabetic kitties just to see the 'normal' curve also. I found that he stayed from 42 to 56 all day so that tells me a 42 on my meter isn't TOO low...

Hugs Sabrina!!!

Hobbs' numbers are wonderful! And I ended up giving that dry food lecture in real life about 4 times this weekend! My friends should know better than to talk to me about cat food by now. The good news is that I got two of the four to promise that they were getting rid of all the dry...

There is absolutely no reason to feed twice a day vs. four times a day unless you enjoy hearing your cat beg for food. In fact, feeding multiple small meals is better for diabetics because it causes more even blood sugar throughout the day. I've been feeding Bandit 4 times a day for years and he's doing great. Any less than that and he'll tear my house apart.

Right now he's on pain meds because he had surgery this weekend, and it's thrown his internal clock off so he's been begging for food every 3 hours or so. So I'm debating feeding him 6 times a day until he's off the drugs!

64 again tonight

I had to swing by Walgreens on the way home to pick up a Rx for myself. It should have been a quick 5 minute thing. I was there over 45 minutes!!! I called at 1 to transfer it and told them I'd like to pick it up by 5 because I get off at 5 and figured that gives them an extra half hour for me to get there. Nope. Still wasn't ready. I don't know if they even started working on it until I got there. I'm fine with waiting a few minutes but 45? I was sooooo ticked!! Luckily I wasn't too late with Hobbs' dinner though if it had taken longer I could have told DH to give it to him. Ridiculous that it took that long!

Oh and for that dream I was talking about... in it I was doing more than just lecturing. I was sanctimonious about it. So not me at all. I'll share my opinion and tell you what I've learned but in my dream I was really going on about how much better I was now that Hobbs was on wet food. I was very annoying. LOL

LOL Better watch it or you are going to be stopping people in the pet food aisle to give them a lecture on why they shouldn't by dry cat food...lol <been there, done that>

Well actually it wasn't me but my 3 year old grandson...I took him to Walmart with me on a cat food run, as I'm cleaning off their shelves of the Fur Gang's perferred flavors of Friskies, he walks up to this lady putting big bags of dry food in her cart and asks "Don't you Love your Kitties?" "Cuz if you really loved your kitties you won't feed them that...they get sick wif beetus when they get older on that food." "My grandma has two kitties wif beetus and now one has to get pokies and stickers to make her better." awww out of the mouths of babes...lol.

Hey Hobbs!

Maxwell thought you might want to start looking through this!
TheFalls.jpg

He also said to tell you that he will be saving you a spot on the beach and will have a fine Catnip cigar and a round of mousetinis waiting for you when you join him at the Falls.

Mel, Maxwell, Musette & The Fur Gang

Hobbs says thanks, Max! And neither of us knew that Niagra had a beach!! LOL He'll have to stay on the US side though, I don't have his birth certificate. :)

OK why did he jump up to 96 tonight??? I know it's still an OK number but it's higher than he has been the last few days. Testing/Dinner was 45 minutes late, would that make a difference? Maybe his liver freaked out?

Maxwell did that to me once, and then about a day later hacked up a huge hairball and after the hairball his numbers went right back down into the 60s again...Who knows, cats will be cats.

Mel, Maxwell, Musette & The Fur Gang

Well he went back down to 66 this morning so maybe it was just his late meal. I'm not usually that late since he gets fed an hour after I get home. I had a massage last night (which was awesome, best I've felt since I've injured myself) and was feeling a bit dizzy afterwards. I assume it's detox, but I've never had it after a massage before. Plus I had to pick up dinner, so I was driving slow and carrying pizza. I really hope the dizziness was post-massage detox and not the bug that's been going around work because I was just sick two weeks ago!! I'm still a little dizzy this morning though so I don't know what's going on!

Hi, Sabrina ~

"Well he went back down to 66 this morning" -- Another great number for Hobbs! Hope you start feeling better today, Sabrina. Please be careful with that dizziness, especially if you need to drive today.

Thinking of you and your dear furguy.

Eva

Maybe Hobbs was just really stressed out thinking he was going to starve because dinner was late yesterday...lol I have a civie here like that you would think he was dying if he meal is more than 10 minutes late, he'll cry, he'll fall over on his side and pull himself along like he is just too weak to stand up anymore. But the moment I pop that first can of food, he makes a wonderful recovery and suddenly can now hop from counter to table to floor and back again, but he was the most pathetic 16lb cat on earth 5 seconds before that..lol

Mel, Maxwell, Musette & The Fur Gang

Wow and I thought Hobbs was over dramatic!!! He'll meow his head off when he thinks it's dinner time. Which is basically any time we go anywhere near the "magic food box." He's left off with the theatrics though. ;)

Yep he's all skin and bones. You can almost see through him, he's so starved. Poor thing. Never gets fed. I bet you never pet on him either, do you?

Nope never...never pet him, hold him, let him sleep on my bed nothing like that at all...he is just such a poor abused kitty...lol

Actually you should have seen him when I got him, he actually was abused back then he was 25lbs...we've gotten him down to 16 but he really should be about 14lbs. His previous owners were involved in domestic violence and would lock him in a dog kennel for not using the litter box, which I never saw cleaned, it was literally over flowing with feces...since we have had him not only has he never not used the box, he goes in after the other cats and covers their business as well.

In fact right now he is sitting on my lap helping me type...lol

Mel, Maxwell, Musette & The Fur Gang

Awww. Poor thing. :( I just don't understand why people do that to thier pets. I'm glad he's in a happy home now.

I was watching an episode of My Cat From Hell where this couple had a cat that (among other things) would pee in their sink. Well no duh the box was filthy. The guy even said on their video diary that he was cleaning it out weekly instead of biweekly like they used to. And I seriously doubt they were scooping either. Hello??? Idiots.

 Yeah that's pretty much Hobbs. He kept meowing tonight as soon as I walked in the door. And good lord I got home early so he had to wait even longer (in his mind). It's amazing he doesn't go horse with all the meowing he does.

Good Morning, Sabrina and Hobbs ~

Have a great day...TGIF.

LOL that's adorable!! Less than a week to go! I was going to order some Super Bowl stuff from Oriental Trading this weekend (we're having people over for the game), I wonder if they have any cat party stuff...

We do something here every year because I have a bunch of cat lover friends...we throw a Kitty Cat Birthday Party. We invite our kitty lovin friends over and everyone has to bring a toy for the house cats as well as a toy, can of food, box of litter, cash etc to be donated at the end of the party to a local shelter. I make a litterbox cake, which is really cute you use tooties rolls to look like ...well you know...lol And all the muncies are cat friendly like tunafish dip, cream cheese & deli turkey pinwheels, etc.
One year I even got little glass fish bowls, the ones you see for Beta Fish, and put rock candy on the bottom then filled them with blueberry jello and once it was about half set pushed gummy fish in them so they looked like little aquariums. :-D

Maybe you can get creative and come up with something like that for Hobbs' OTJ party? If Oriental Trader doesn't have any good cat decorations.

Mel, Maxwell, Musette & The Fur Gang

That sounds like an awesome party!! We have neighbors across the hall that have about 4 cats, I bet they'd appreciate something like that. :)

Well Hobbs was at 63 tonight. I think the other night was a jump up induced due to OMGIMNOTBEINGFED stress.

So as I was typing this DH comes in from the grill and says "Hobbs just pooped on the carpet!" Sure enough, he did. Not sure what that's about. His box is clean (I just scooped and noticed he hadn't pooped) and it looks to big to be a "dangler" so I dont' know what's going on with him.

So we're watching TV on the couch tonight and a little while ago DH got up from his spot. Hobbs took the opportunity of a warm empty spot on the couch and promptly jumped up to take it. DH went to the washroom, did a few other things, even came into the living room. I thought he saw Hobbs in his spot. I guess not because he sat down on Hobbs (who never says anything) and DH jumped back up and said "What the hell?" and realized that Hobbs was there. Hobbs continued to sit there as if nothing happened. LOL He's such an easy going cat, and seeing DH jumping up and wondering why his seat was so lumpy all of a sudden just struck me as super funny.

Hi, Sabrina ~

1/28 - Another great day for you two! Love those 60s!
