the other night with my PMPS I got 508. I quickly grabbed another strip and tested again and got 578! can the stress of testing make it jump that fast?
 
Meters are allowed a 20% variance by the FDA, so even if you had 2 exact same meters and tested the exact same blood droplet, the numbers could be 20% off

So if the first test was a 508, that means the blood glucose could be anywhere from 406 to 609
 
Meters may read +/- 20% from the actual value of the blood
so 508 +/- 20% -> 406.4 to 609.6
and 578 +/-20% -> 462.4 to 693.6
Because these ranges overlap, the numbers may be considered equal.
And at these numbers, the specific number doesn't much matter - the glucose is too high and you'll be looking for ways to help reduce it - following your insulin guidelines, looking at food options, etc.
