High, flat numbers

After a little over a month on Caninsulin, Perlutz is now on ProZinc as of last week. We've started with 1 unit twice a day which we've gradually increased due to constant high numbers and he is now on 1.5 units. His BG is still high though and, although we haven't been able to test much apart from AMPS/PMPS, the few times we tested it didn't really go down much if at all. As the weekend is here, we'll try to fill in some more blanks but in the meantime, would really appreciate to hear from some of you who maybe had the same happen to their fur babies? It's been a month and a half since diagnostic and although I'm not as stressed as I was during first weeks, I still feel maybe we're doing something wrong ??? :arghh:

I should mention that despite his high numbers, he is in pretty good spirits :cat: eating really well, he is lively although not playing much lately but to be fair, he has always been a lazy ass and he is nearly 12 yo... But I'll keep trying, bought him few new toys that he has yet to pay any attention to but I'm still hoping they won't become part of the decor like others  He has days when he drinks more water and others when he drinks smaller amounts

He is eating Thrive cans, between 2 and 3 cans a day which should be just a tiny bit under his estimated recommended calories intake for his ideal weight (I used some info found on Dr Lisa's website) but now while writing this, I'm not sure if the calories calculator I found somewhere on FDMB was per can or per 100g - I'm getting confused now  I shall check/redo my calculations :bookworm::coffee:

Aother question I have is about the glucose monitor. Thanks to his previous vet who diagnosed him, we're using the Alpha "Rip off" Track  which we would like to change (not sure what his current vet thinks of human meters but he might be okay with it, he seems to be happy with us having some involvment in decisions like with the insulin for example). I currently have my eyes on AccuCkeck Performa Nano as the strips are affordable and available in Boots - is anyone using this meter? Is it good? Does anyone know if the sample is more or less the same as AT? I looked on the meter box and their website and couldn;t find what size sample it is required :banghead: The other meter I saw recommended in UK was the SD CodeFree but read some pretty bad reviews on Amazon?! We'd like something with a smaller sample size as his ears don;t always bleed much ...

Speaking of meters, is there a recommended ketone meter? I have the strips but collecting a sample is a pain. He won't pee with me in the room  so putting the stick while he's peeing is a no and he loves playing with the litter before a pee so my strategically placed cling foil is always thrown out or in a corner

Sorry for the long rant :spam:

Hi Georgiana
First, take heart - these are still early days and I doubt if you're doing anything seriously wrong. Cut yourself a bit of slack!

I'll keep this short as I'm just popping out for a couple of hours but wanted to say that the Accuchek Performa Nano is a good meter, yes - it's been used successfully by other UKers and I think needs a smallish sample of blood so you should be ok. If in doubt, ask at the Boots counter and they should be able to advise. The Code-Free might not be quite as good but is cheaper and certainly better than nothing for people who are on a tight budget.

Good luck and keep at it - all this can and does take a while but you're doing well!
