High BG

I have a baby scale at home and I do weigh my cats, too. How much weight has she lost? Hopefully it will be only temporary and she will gain again.

hard to tell exactly because it varies during the day according to input and ouput! i think of it as a range while i'm weighing her morning and and night. the high and low had both been increasing steadily until recently but the evening after our nice yellow she was about 20g lighter than previous lows.

like her metabolsim changed gear suddenly after the yellow maybe? Is that a thing that happens? shes being urinating more the last day or two too

shes heavier this morning than yesterday morning though so hopefully it was blip that is beginning to settle....

Try to get a +2 tomorrow night if you can… or another hour if you can set an alarm and wake up, test and go back to sleep. She’s been really high today. I anticipate increasing to 1 unit after two more days.

yes will do. sorry. i've been sooo tired and the idea of waking up in early hours to record black numbers.....i just couldn't face it. but i've had a couple of nights proper sleep now so no excuses!

Right now we only have half of the picture. We don’t know of she’s had perhaps another yellow at night and is bouncing up as a result or if she’s just staying high. Of course, there’s no guarantee that you would be able to catch it, but there could be indications of lower numbers. I just hope for a clearer picture as we get ready to increase her dose, although we have plenty of room for safety at this point with the lowest recorded number being a yellow 236 number.

she found some contraband hi carb food in her sisters bowl this afternoon. i'm hoping that has contributed towards the red pmps

Pink all day. Okay. She’s ready. I would just get a +2 tonight and if it’s similar to PMPS (pink) I would just stop testing then.

That was a very high yellow 297 so almost 300 which is pink. I would definitely have proceeded with the increase.

It’s good to know that she was in yellow though. Still, she has a long way to go, but she’s making progress. I understand your hesitation.

I often tell people to remember that they aren’t shooting the number where the cat is at shot time— they are shooting the number where the cat will be in two hours when the insulin will “onset” — meaning that usually the action of the previous shot is waning and the new shot will not take effect for about two hours.

great, thank you. i just wasn't sure. we will do the increase tonight then.

Another approach to handling lower than expected preshot numbers is to stall WITHOUT feeding the cat and retest in another half hour or hour to see if BG is rising. That sometimes makes things more difficult though— and in your case would really make the p.m. shot time soooo late.

It’s interesting that her +2 number is exactly the same as yesterday. Can you get a +6 today?

How is she feeling? Can you notice any changes?

yes i can test any time at all today!

she seems less frantically hungry and a bit more comfortable. and drinking less i think

i think the identical reading must be just conicidence? the meter doesn't seem to be that accurate. there was a lot of blood at one of yesterdays tests so i did 5 tests out of curisosity. they varied from 22 to 26...

All glucometers are allowed to have a 20 percent or so variance for accuracy. So you can test the same drop of blood and get some differing numbers. I would sometimes do this and get identical numbers and sometimes different numbers— usually not as much as 20 percent though.

So 22 to 26 is spot on for about a 20 percent difference. It is frustrating though. That is one reason why we look at trends in BG and why we recommend retesting with another test strip if you get a number that is very unexpected. Sometimes it can be meter variance and sometimes a wonky test strip.
