Hi!
My name is Anna and my 14 year old female calico was just diagnosed with diabetes. It started with a steroid shot and now we have a diagnosis.
She is now on Hill’s Rx diet and only on wet food effective today. Has been getting 1 unit of Lantau Solostar twice daily, but is hovering around 450, after the insulin. Need to adjust dose, but can’t keep taking her in, as the new vet wants.
Having been lost once in 2008 and having come back from a lengthy hospital stay, she just wants to be at home. I am a healthcare provider and with some guidance can try to manage her at home.
I’d like to increase the dosage, is 1/2 a unit ok?
 
I would think half a unit would be ok as long as you are able to check her BG on occasion. You may also want to post on the general health board as you may get more responses that way.
 
Welcome to FDMB Anna and Miki. You are going to find the information, advice and support you are looking for here on the board. You will be able to manage Miki's diabetes treatment at home. Home testing, keeping track of the blood sugar test results on our spreadsheet and a better diet for Miki are going to give you better results, while saving you money at the vet and decreasing the "stress readings" at the vet for Miki. Typically, going to the vet raises those BG results. In addition, the Hill's Rx food Miki is on is not the best choice, it's too high in carbs and is actually not a "prescription" food at all. There are better choices at better costs. Also, transitioning to all wet lower carb food is going to reduce the blood sugar levels, and it's best to be testing to help prevent a hypo event (blood sugar too low).

Hi and welcome.
We recommend increasing in 1/4 (0.25 unit increments). It is safer and you are less likely to go past the best dose.
Also look into home testing blood sugar levels. Best thing you can do for your kitty to keep her safe. .

Hi all,
Thank you so much. What a relief. I’ve been so upset, not the least of which because I seemed to be getting no guidance from the vet. I’ve had to learn how to use the alpha tracker on YouTube, after being told that they’ll show me how to use it only after I bring her in for more testing. This after I told them that she was extremely agitated on the last trip, peed in the carrier and they couldn’t do anything after I got her there (though I still paid $70).
I seem to be having navigating the site on the phone, will try on laptop at work tomorrow. Wanted to make sure to thank everyone for their input. Truly appreciate it. I also got Kiwi kitchens chicken formula, any thoughts?

I'm so sorry you have not had support from your vet. Most cats get stressed going to the vet so we all get that! It is a very stressful time learning your kitty has FD. But the great thing is you have definitely come to the right place. There are lots of very knowledgable people here who will help you all through this journey. It is a very manageable disease and it's great to have other people who understand, to talk things through with.
Here is a link to suitable canned cat foods. Choose ones that have 10% or less carbs.

What is a “good” BG range with insulin injections? We have been giving her 1unit for past one month, swich d her to wet food and she’s still hovering in the high 400’s. After tonight’s reading I gave her 2 units. I’ve been using the same Lantus pen, though it says to discard after 28 days. Is that the problem? Not sure I can afford a new pen as well as vet visits every month.
A pharmacist friend said the pen’s still ok, though has slightly less potency. She suggested going to 2 units.
