Just found out Annie (14 year old orange and white female) has diabetes - hair loss, copius water consumption and urination, weight loss, gingivitis...
Quite a shock. Wife is distraught, me; encouraged that we can hopefully manage. Change diet to all soft food, twice a day and 2 units of insulin in the morning. Back to vet in 2 days for reevaluation on dosage. Wish us luck 1480560243595-1582316954.jpg

Welcome! It's always a shock to get this diagnosis. There's lots of help available here so post any questions you have on the main health forum where more people will see them.

If your changing the food AND giving insulin please home test as it can create a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels.

Sending warm wishes for Annie's treatment to go well; diabetes is do-able!

As recommended above, with the food change and the start of insulin treatment home testing really is important for Annie's safety because the diet change can lower BG levels quite significantly and quickly. Here are some helpful links to help you learn how:

Home testing links and tips (has video tutorials)

Testing and injecting tips (has very good diagram showing where to test on the ear)

Important safety information is in these links:

How to Spot and Treat Hypos - print this out and keep it somewhere you can lay hands on it quickly in an emergency.

Hypo Toolkit

If you're worried about anything at all don't hesitate to call a vet and also please post for help on the Feline Health board (has more traffic than the Welcome board). There are members here from around the world so there should be someone online who can assist you.
