So glad to have found this wealth of info, resources, and community.

My 11 year old boy Buddy stopped eating and I feel awful that I didn't notice because I have 2 jobs, 6 cats, and leave out dry food...**gasp**

Took him to the animal hospital and he was found to have ketoacidosis. 3-4days in ICU and $5,000 later, we got to bring him home and enjoy tube feeding lots of meds and administering insulin.

He has gone from 2 to 1.5 and has been on 1 unit of Lantus for the past week. The vet believes that he might go into remission.

So (after lurking/learning here for 2days), I have bought some low carb fancy feast for all of my cats and i'm looking into home testing him because i'd like to see if/when he might not need the insulin anymore. Plus, the last glucose curve cost about $150.

Mostly, I just wanted to say thanks for this place.

When I go get a meter and some tests under my belt, I wanted to make sure and have the stage set for my questions.

Many thanks,
Carol

Before you change the food you must be testing!!!

The glucose level may drop 100 mg/dL from a food change, drastically altering the amount of insulin needed.

Also, make the food change gradually, about 20-25% per day, to reduce the chances of GI upset - nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

And welcome to FDMB

Hi Carol,

Does Buddy still have the tube in? If so, it sounds like you've already made the food switch for him. ;-) And, since you're already tube-feeding him, this might bode well for when it comes time for testing. Here is a page of ear testing tips that you may find helpful in getting you started. Where do you live? we might be able to advise you on some meters to chose from. In the US, most of us here prefer the ReliOn brand from Walmart because they have the lowest cost of test strips around (which is where the cost often adds up).

Let us know how things are going and if you have any questions in the meantime. :-D
