Hi. Our beloved cat Bow was just diagnosed. He spent the past 5 days seeking cool places like the cast iron tub, laying down stretched out breathing labored, drinking more but eating less and not seeking company. It was over a 100 degrees outside and we had hoped he was just warm and needed more water but knew something else was going on too. The vet was booked with the holiday weekend, we sat at pet urgent care for 2.5 hours on Friday night just to be sent home petrified. He ate some soaked kibbles and felt somewhat better— I should have known then. We kept slowly nurturing him like this and finally on Sunday he purred a little. Still he’s cry in pain sometimes and his breathing was difficult. He’d always feel somewhat better after eating. This morning I could finally drop him off at the vet and blood tests just confirmed he has some kidney issues and diabetes, still waiting to see about the heart so he has to stay longer. We’re scared. The doctor said we might have to have another conversation. please send some Encouragement our way

I'm so sorry he's not doing well. :( diabetes is very treatable... My cat had diabetes and kidney disease and did well for a long time. I'm mostly concerned about what the heart issues are. I hope it's all treatable.

I’m so sorry Bow is not well; diabetes is very treatable and kidney issues can also can be managed especially in the earlier stages. We do have some cats here that also have heart issues and are on medication.
He looks a beautiful boy.
I had a cat called Bow when I was a child.
Please let us know how things are when you can.
 
Hi all, thank you for the kind replies. I was able to bring Bow home last night with some meloxicam and an antibiotic shot. Just got a call from the vet. He is concerned about the complexities of the case. The heart pap result is not great, we have kidney challenges, heart challenges, diabetes, a strain on the heart. He recommends a specialist for a ekg or possibly a blood pressure and fluids today, but he is concerned about his quality of life. He wants to support the kidneys but previously said their levels weren’t bad just slightly elevated. I asked if diet could be helpful. What I worry about is his breathing. I don’t want him to suffer but truly I am overwhelmed and new at this. The fact that the vet would want to talk about the possibility of ethutanasia is just so painful. I feared this so I could barely sleep. Bowie eats little and is comforted when he cuddles. Thank you for your kindnesses.

Diet changes are a good idea. You will want foods low in carb for the
diabetes and low in phosphorus for the ckd. What insulin did he prescribe? The preferred insulins are ProZinc and lantus.

Is always a good idea to get blood pressure checked for cats with kidney disease.
What was his glucose level?
Did you get a copy of the lab reports?

So diet.... A good choice is weruva foods. They have a lot of good lower carb (under 10 percent) and lower phosphorus (under 1 percent phosphorus) foods. This is what I feed my cat Weruva slide and serve pate foods Family Food (.97 phosphorus and 0 carb). Also Jeopurrdy Chicken (0.97 P 6.1 carb)

What a Crock 0.71 phosphorus and 8 carb lots of gravy so she loved it.

Goody stew shoes 0.71 phosphorus, 8.5 carb. This one was a big hit

Weruva Steak Frites (0.57 phosphorus 5.5 carb although I take out any big pieces of potatoes to try to limit the carbs just a bit)

Weruva LA isla Bonita - phosphorus 0.77 carb 4.5 (used to like, not a favorite anymore)
Glam and punk 1% carb, 0.93 phosphorous.

Weruva paw lickin chicken 3.3 carb 0.82 p and
Press your lunch 5.9 carb. 0.82 phosphorous

Bff play Laugh Out Loud chicken and lamb 7.7 carb, 0.82 phosphorous

BFF play destiny (chicken and duck) 0.87 phosphorus 7.7 carb

Bff play chicken cherish 0.71 phosphorus 7.6 carb

Bff play best buds chicken and beef 7.9 carb 0.9 phosphorus

Bff play chicken Checkmate. 7.7 carb 0.7 phos

On the Cat Wok 3.8 carb 0.74 phos

Hi Janet,

the Vet prescribed Vetsulin, this is what they have in their office. I’m to get it this morning. Bow has been hiding and not feeling well snd eating very little.
Thank you for listing these wonderful resources I will look into where I can obtain them.

his glucose level was checked after several hours of not eating at the vet before I picked him up and I showed 121. I have not been able to get a monitor yet. Is there a particular one you recommend?

I used the Alphatrak... But most use a human meter. The Walmart Relion Prime is a popular choice. I have a video in my signature showing how I tested my cat CC at home.
