Good evening! Just registered and am posting my story, I hear it's a wonderful group to be part of : )
Alex Olivia and Donovan came to the Howard County Cat Club after being surrendered to a kill-shelter because the owner ‘had too many animals’. These two are super sweet and quickly became staff favorites. Because of their wonderful personalities, the staff put out a plea to save this duo – which are reminiscent of a sweet older couple (they are 10-years-young).
Our group home was moving locations so we agreed to take them, but they had to stay at the shelter for 16 days until the move happened. Around day 11, Alex Olivia started looking a bit skinny and the staff had been noticing a lot of pee in the litter box. A quick urine dipstick test alerted them that she might be diabetic, and since then a full blood panel at the vet has confirmed this. Instead of going to the group home, they went into foster care with me where Alex Olivia has been started on insulin and home testing to monitor her numbers (well, I am trying to do the testing).
They are doing well – eating lots, purring and enjoying all the head scratches they can steal from us! However, we are inexperienced at caring for a diabetic kitty and I am so afraid we are going to miss important signs that will help/hinder her road to remission. Furthermore, our schedules are not conducive to being home on a regular schedule, and in a few weeks we will start having some overnight travel.
Therefore, we are putting out the word in hopes of finding someone with experience who would be willing to foster this great pair (by the way, we have other cats and so far they all get along just fine). Ideally, this person would help us get them placed in a wonderful forever home since that person is likely to have connections in the feline diabetic world. We will also assist in finding them a home through our usual channels!!
Missy from HCCC has put up a couple of postings lately about Alex Olivia and everyone has been great in responding with advice.
We are also willing to transport these kitties to a suitable foster/forever home. They’re so darn sweet we just can’t help but do everything we can to help them, especially since their last ‘owner’ discarded them like an old pair of shoes! I look into their eyes and it makes me sad, but on the other hand I think had she stayed in the home they probably would have ignored her signs until it was too late.......
