Hershey - Nightly 'Growliness'

I started to post earlier, when Hershey's PMPS was (464) but instead I listened to Carl saying, 'It's one number. We take this dance 12 hours at a time.' and tried to focus on that, even though, I was soooo disappointed with that number - not gonna lie.

My bigger concern is this - Wednesday night, about 11:30, Hershey started getting 'growly' at Oreo. Oreo would be across the room, not even looking at Hershey, didn't matter. It was that guttural kind of growl like how they both act after a vet visit when she gets a little too personal, know what I mean? Anyway, I sat up with him until shot time to keep an eye on Hershey and look out for Oreo. All total the 'growliness' lasted about 3 hours.

Last night, about 11:30, Hershey started again, but this time it lasted less than :30 before Hershey got on the futon and went to sleep.

Tonight, about 12:30, Hershey started again. It's been about :45 and I think he's over it.

Any thoughts on why he's started this? At first, I thought maybe he was just feeling really yucky and I thought about testing him, except I was afraid it would upset him more. Maybe it's the moon phase...or who knows?? My son noticed earlier (when holding him) that the surgical hip seems to move a lot and make some noise. Could it be that it's bothering him because he's still so bony? But, if that's the case why didn't he act like this before gaining that pound back?

He just came back in the room, walking silently past Oreo and jumping on the arm of my chair. Who knows the mood swings of guys?? ;-)

Any ideas are appreciated -

Libby (and Grumpy pants...I mean, Hershey, too!)

This may be coincidence but I'm wondering...is the growly thing occurring a couple hours before his shot? Does he only do this at night or daytime too?

Is he eating ok? Is it after he eats or before? Wonder if stomach is hurting. When was he at vet last to get bloodwork checked?

It just started Wednesday night. ~11:30 Wed & Thurs nights and ~12:30 Fri night. Shot time is 3 (well, 2:45am this morning). He eats at shot time and +6, so 3 & 9.

So, 2-1/2 to 3 hours after eating and 3 or so hrs before shot.

He had bloodwork done in Nov when diagnosed.

Thanks, again -

Libby,
Is it just Oreo he growls at, or is he just generally being grumpy? Is he okay if you approach or pet him while it's going on?

It seems to be just Oreo. When he came my way, I scritched under his chin and he didn't make a sound at me.

Well, that seems to indicate it isn't pain or discomfort causing it, to me. Weird, sometimes my boys don't get along great, but it's usually either when one feels bad (he'll be the growler) or when one just got home from the vet, and the other one growls at him. In that case, I think it's because they smell odd from the vet visit.
Could be that you missed some interaction where Oreo was the aggressor, and Hershey is still ticked off about it?

I know ECID....There are times when Poopy seems to feel great when he becomes very aggressive with Mia. Since Poopy is missing a couple of very important parts (two to be exact), once he gets Mia trapped and under him, gripping her scruff between his teeth, straddling her, he gets this lost look on his face since he has no clue what to do next. This infuriates Mia who screams like the dickens, demanding for the fat Poop to get off of her and leave her be.

Has Hershey always been the dominant kitty?

When Poopy was feeling under the weather, Mia became the aggressor. Way too funny to watch, even if it was sad. (Mia is less than half Poopy's size.)

I know none of this may help. I've yet to decipher cat code too. :dizcat

Sneakers just plain growled. She came from a pet house where she was the lowest on the pet pole and adopted me, who had no cat... when they moved in with me my White Sox ran away because he didn't like the dog (who was used to cats and didn't chase but was VERY BIG :!: ). We still see him from time to time so he found someone to live with- he's got to be almost 20 :!: )

When White Sox moved out she moved in. When her family moved out... she came back (it wasn't that far away but it was repeated over and over again until we got the picture). She wasn't giving me up for anything   . But she doesn't like it when I try to get her to be sociable and have a friend- I tried twice before I gave up and just let her be the top (and only) cat.

My mother has two 15 year old cats. The black Manx kitty, Coal has always had a somewhat "bad disposition" at times.
Every time either she or her littermate, Amber go the vet, doesn't matter which one, Coal will growl and hiss at Amber, very grumpy. Shes always done this, sometimes this has went on for 3 weeks after vet visit, drives my mom nuts.
Coal is a force to be reckoned with anyway; she will scratch or bite for no reason, esp. my mom and she is jealous when mom is on the computer or phone and will bite, yet other times shes sweet.
You should see her exorcist pose mouth partially open, hissing and snarling, really possessed looking
Neither one of mom's cats are diabetic, they have hyper_T. I think they smell funny to themselves and their housemates plus the stress of vet visit makes them grumpy and edgy.

Oreo is a prankster and will lay in wait to jump out on Hershey. You never know where he may come from, but he's always been that way. I know he misses Hershey feeling up to wrestling/chasing for long periods of time, but he isn't really aggressive. He weighs a lot more than Hershey, but when they do wrestle/fight, Oreo is the one with the bloody ear, know what I mean?

And, yes, Hershey has always been the dominant one. He didn't growl last night, so who knows??

Both went to the vet in Nov and not since. Post vet visits, Oreo is the growler/hisser, I think it's because the vet gets a little too 'friendly' if you know what I mean!

Oh, Teresa - poor Poopy, but what a funny picture I got!

Angela - Oreo has been sniffing more around Hershey and I wondered if maybe a diabetic cats smells sweeter. Not sure if the extra sniffing led to Hershey's 'growling' or not. Maybe he's telling him to BACK OFF!! ;-)

I wonder if they discuss us like we discuss them??? :o
