Herman is at the vet for his dental work. Not sure if any extractions needed, they will do full cleaning and take X-rays.

A couple questions…
...He fasted all night (unhappy Herman!) and we skipped this mornings shot, am I to give it to him as soon as I pick him up or just skip the am cycle and restart at his usual pm time? I was instructed to bring a dose of his insulin with me so they could give it to him after, which I did, but gave them the instructions to hold off until we’ve spoken, because I may just skip it and start with the p.m., which kind of makes more sense to me because if they give it to him at noon or later then I’m on a weird schedule that’s hard for me to do and would take a while to get back from.

…if they want to prescribe pain meds after, are there any types I should be staying away from? He is notoriously hard to pill or syringe into mouth so I’m hoping he just gets a cleaning and nothing else needed! Although his tartar was quite bad with gingivitis and there was a suspect looking area….either way fingers crossed…

they will also recheck his urine to make sure his uti is cleared up.

I don't really have advice about pain meds. Bella had dentals twice, once since she has diabetes. She did not eat much the first night after surgery, she was all groggy. I gave her some turkey baby food with a syringe, it was kind of hard but she took a little. I gave her her insulin that night. She's been great since, like a younger cat. I hope Herman will have a great recovery and I'm thinking of you, I know how hard it is to leave our kitties! :bighug:

Thanks yes, it’s so stressful! Worrying about whether they will eat after you give insulin worrying about a pain medication adversely affecting their diabetes, etc. I did a quick search of metacam on the forum, and from what I can tell it’s pretty common now, but there were some pretty dire warnings about it in some posts from a few years ago…since they were older posts maybe new research has proven it ok?
 
I wouldn't give the insulin early. Just count this morning as a fur shot and give the PM dose at the normal time once you make sure Herman will eat. Do you have any meat only baby food in case he doesn't want to eat his normal food? Are they going to give an antibiotic since they are removing teeth? :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I don’t have any baby food I can grab some. I dont know if they are prescribing antibiotics or not…. They said they don’t always for teeth extractions, but they would let me know. They’re also checking to make sure his UTI is completely cleared up so he might need antibiotics for that if they find any issues there. My poor baby I’m not looking forward to a week of worrying about whether he will eat or not and if I can keep him safe.. but I’m just worried and overthinking!!! I shouldn’t get too stressed out. Maybe he’s going to do just fine eat like a champ! :rolleyes:
 
Usually if they're not going to eat it's the first night after anesthesia. Furball, and any of my other cats, always ate right away. Try not to worry. Make sure the baby food is meat only. Some have garlic and onions which are harmful to cats. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
 
May of last year Tango had a couple extractions. The vet said he ate soon after without any problem. When he got home, he was chomping with his normal food right away. They gave us a prescription for gabapentin, which we only gave for two days as he didn't seem to need it. We gave a full round of the antibiotics. Tango was 11 then and he is a piggy.

It's really hard to find all meat baby food in Canada. Most have some veggies in them. I tried finding it in BC, but no luck. Something like the TikiCat Mousse products might be similar. If he's hungry, only give him a little bit at a time when he comes home. Anaesthesia can slow the gut and you don't want him throwing up.

I had a no Metacam policy with Neko. Her kidneys were not great when the dental vet first offered it. Discussion of pros and cons of Metacam here: Metacam ! - Is it safe? Neko had buprenorphine instead when she had extraction (first time), growth on jaw bone removed (second time). She had antiobiotics each time. If Herman is to get antibiotics, I suggest getting a good probiotic and giving that to him a couple hours apart from the AB. The typical dental AB, Clindamycin, is quite hard on the tummy. I can speak from personal experience. It comes in pills or liquid - which is apparently foul tasting by Neko's reaction.

Skip insulin until tonight. Test him when he gets home, then again at PMPS. Some anaesthesia induction drugs lower the BG. So if he doesn't feel like eating and his numbers are dropping, that can be a bad combo. Typically in Canada they use a newer induction drug that doesn't drop the BG, but worth asking the vet.

I have some churu and can try to grab tiki cat mousse on my way to get Herm. He loves his fancy feast so hoping that’s tempting for him.

Read up on metacam on those links…wow…there’s a lot to consider and while I was writing this message, the vet called and said the extraction went well and I can pick him up in about an hour, but that she would like to see him on metacam for four days and that that is what she would recommend (I mentioned that I had read up a bit and there was some concern and she thought for the short term it was the best option for him). She also confirmed that he still has a bit of a UTI so will be restarting Clavamox for another week.
Insulin …Clavamox… metacam it’s gonna be a bit of a week! He’s not the most tolerant cat with meds... I’m a little nervous, but I’ll do whatever it takes!
 
Back in the day, when I worked at the local shelter, and before the warnings came out, Metacam liquid was just mixed in with food. One less med that's hard to get in, if that works for Herman.

So after we skipped the shot in the morning if I was to keep the same schedule he’d be due for his p.m. shot in about two hours and he is currently at 84. It’s lower than I expected. I’m thinking perhaps a BCS half dose is safer? He just had a small snack. So I think that’s a very good sign that he’s eating but who knows what the evening will hold. :nailbiting:
 
I just wanted to send some calming vibes for you and Herman. Those dentals are super stressful, especially for our sugar babies! It sounds like he did very well, and I wonder if this won't get back into remission, it looks like he's headed there already! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
