Maggi has had diabetes for about seven years, has been on Lantus and has done very well. About a month ago we saw the middle section of her tail was becoming bald, took her to a vet who gave her an antibiotic shot, said was probably an infection. Nope. Then she recommended Douxo, anti-fungal moist pads which seemed to do nothing. Loss of tail hair continues but Maggi seems to act normally so I am at a loss. Have little confidence in the vet, google tells me nothing helpful, thought I would appeal to the wisdom here.
Thank you for any ideas you have. Oh, BTW, the tail has a few spots with faint reddish lines, no scabs, just little lines...wondering if this is a fungus?

What food are you feeding her? It is possible that the manufacturer changed an ingredient ot supplier and this is a food allergy. Can you try switching her to a limited ingredient food? Or consider to a homemade diet so you know exactly what is going into the food

I think the previous suggestions are by far the most likely, but since my cats tend to have unusual illnesses I wonder if this could be an endocrine problem like thyroid disease, excess production of sex hormones causing a stud tail appearance, or excess cortisol production (Cushing’s)

I’m glad her diabetes is well controlled and I hope she gets better soon

edit: neither of my Cushing’s cats lost only tail hair (they had overall thinning everywhere including tail but bald patches only on belly). However, Cushing’s is much more common in dogs and tail hair loss to me seems fairly common judging from pictures I’ve seen reading about Cushing’s in pets)

Thanks for the replies! The vet did a quickie exam, assume she checked for ringworm but I know what ringworm looks like and this isn't it. Maggi has been on prescription food from Chewy for years, does well on it, don't think food is it. I googled Cushing's and doesn't seem to fit either, BUT good news is that the red spots/marks seem to be nearly gone. I've been using those little anti-fungal wipes, Douxos, and added prescription fungus ointment we had already, Mupirocin ointment, and I am hopeful that it may be working. If this clears things up, hoping the beautiful tail will reappear soon. Thanks for the input; much appreciated.
