What is the term when the cat gets too much insulin and the liver reacts by spiking the glucose?

Please respond quickly if you can help---we have a vet appointment in 30 minutes.

I think Kitty is getting too much insulin and want to talk to the vet. She had BIG swings yesterday and I stayed up and tested all night. I will update her spreadsheet asap.

Thanks!

I replied on Health. You got a high flat curve last night. That could indicate too much insulin, but you want to be careful with a recent DKA cat when reducing the dose. Test for ketones, make sure she is eating and drinking and monitor bg levels often if you lower the dose.

Just my 2c I don't see rebound in the #s, with a quick look at the SS. Somogyi rebound is triggered by hypo-low #s, or by steep drops that cause the body to think hypo is a danger. I don't see either of those going on.

Also know that ketones are caused by too little insulin rather than high #s per se. So if at some point you see liver training - which can look like rebound in the sense that you get sky high #s especially after seeing good #s, but is not true rebound b/c it's not triggered by any actual hypo danger or steep drop - don't cut back on insulin due to that.

That said, I'd probably be nervous too with 3u, especially with lower PSs. :) If you do reduce, I'd do it in small increments. Something like 2.8 rather than 3u, and then monitor for lows. You're not seeing even blues or greens though, so there's nothing I'm seeing that suggests too much insulin, if anything I would consider raising the dose. You might also want to get spot tests at varying times (like different times different days) around possible nadir times, especially early in the cycle - +3.5, +4, stuff like that, to look for unexpected early lows or steep drops. If you saw a 50 at +4 and then a 400 by +9, yeah, that would look like rebound. Sometimes if you vary the spot tests you can catch something oddball like that that you weren't aware of. I don't really suspect it here though, but just mentioning that for general info.

Caveat is my head is in a fog and I only took a quick look at the SS, sorry. But can't resist putting in my 2c I guess :) just don't want to see ketones return for you guys. (And have made the mistake in the past of seeing rebound that isn't there, so I hope others can learn from my mistakes!)
