Caren and Creamsickle

Member Since 2017
Creamsicle was diagnosed about a month ago. We started home testing immediately but his numbers confuse me. Just when I think it begins to make sense, it doesn't!! He was on prozinc and since that didn't work switched to Lantus. Started low 1 u and today vet increased to 2u. He eats Purina DM wet food. I'd appreciate any help! Thanks

I had to request permission to access your ss.

We try not to increase in whole units because you could easily miss the optimal dose.
Increments go up generally 0.25 u at a time.

I'll wait until I can see the ss.

Welcome Caren and Creamsickle, !! I'll leave the advice to more expirenced ones who I'm sure will help you.

Do change your SS so that it does not require permission to see it so that they can take a look at it and help.

Caren, I can't stay up and wait tonite.
I have to get up at 4:30 am for a flight tomorrow so I have to go to bed in a few minutes.

Someone else will be able to help you once you figure out how to make your info public.

I can see your spreadsheet now. I suggest you add a bolder dividing line on it to show where Lantus data starts. Have you decided whether you'll use TR (Tight Regulation) or SLGS (Start Low Go Slow) as your dosing method? You can read about each in the yellow stickies listed at the top of the Lantus forum page.

Hello and welcome. That's a sweet little blue you managed to spot tonight. Many kitties go lower at night, so good on you getting that test in.

We hold the initial Lantus dose for 5-7 days, depending on whether you are following Start Low Go Slow or Tight Regulation protocol for dosing. Unless kitty goes low enough to earn a reduction. Lantus is a depot insulin and it takes at least that long to build the depot. Your spreadsheet says you gave 1 unit tonight, and I would stay at 1 unit at least a few more days. I think going to 2 units would be too much insulin. It's definitely too large an increase.

popping in to check on you...
gotta get on the plane in a couple of hours...

that blue is wonderful to see, so glad you caught it.
That is a good confirmation for the current dose.
Please don't increase as the vet instructed, it would be too too much insulin.

lantus likes consistency and it takes a few days to fill the depot ( it accumulates in their system and builds up )
just stay at this dose unless of course, you earn a reduction.
