Hi Everyone,

Current schedule is 1 unit lantus 830a and 830p

Thank you so much for the help so far. I am waiting for my vet to call today. Insulin WAS going great so far, until an unexpected dip today in two hours from 9 to 1.9. He is now back up to 7.2 and I am continuing honey syringes and checking blood glucose every 15 minutes Would this sudden dip be because he is not eating enough? He will eat but is being very picky and i have to basically hand feed him but he will take it. I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow at 2 and a scheduled call today I am still waiting on.

I haven't been able to test for keytones yet since he is not really peeing (the vet doesn't seem worried about that but I was advised here to test so I am trying to!).

He has had one small pee in 24 hours and one small* diarrhea (I assume from switching his food abruptly to whatever he would eat). I am going to keep syringing water, any ideas how much?

Any and all advice appreciated!

Dropping to 1.9 is definitely too low. Anything under 2.7 means the dose is too high.

Once he'd had some high carb food and/or honey/syrup, you only need to test for the next 2 hours to make sure they don't drop back down (and if they do, that 2 hour clock starts over)

I'd drop him back to .75 and see if that would allow you to give every 12 hours

Thank you! I will ask my vet tomorrow to reduce to .75 and give me syringes because right now we just have the pen with lowest dose as 1. So stressful seeing those numbers.

Do you know if its common for cats to loose their appetite when figuring out insulin? I am worried about his eating and drinking. He has had a pee today but I can see he is having difficulties as hes not eating or drinking enough. I am going to ask about appetite stimulating injection but Im wondering if this is a sign of something else or common if anyone knows? So much for me to learn!

I mix water in with Howie’s wet food as he doesn’t drink water out of his bowl any more despite putting it out everyday. If I didn’t do that, I would be afraid of dehydration. I think he pees 2-3 times every 24 hours. My vet to only be concerned if he strains when pees (which he doesn’t).

and give me syringes because right now
You can buy syringes at a human pharmacy. These have half unit markings. The pharmacist might say they don't carry them but ask them to look. The box will look like one of the images below.

Thank you for the info :)

Mine say 6mm, is that ok? Everything else looks the same

Don’t wait on lowering the dose because he may go too low overnight. If I waited to hear from my vet every time I needed to adjust the dose, Minnie would likely no longer be here. Main reason why I home test and learned from the best here, so I can control Minnie’s diabetes on my own without relying on call backs and feeling helpless not knowing what to do. Knowledge is power!! :bighug:

That is a great point! I will try to learn. It is a lot to learn at once but I will keep reading through everything.
