? Help! The ER Vet messed up insulin timing

Hello,

I am still new here and things have been crazy (hence no spreadsheet) because I had to take my cat to the ER vet for a uti. They decided his blood sugar was too high (in the 500s) and hospitalized him. They gave him his insulin at 9 am and then 10 pm. I normally give the insulin at around 7:30 to 7:45. This was day before last.

Now he has to go the vet for an enema and they want me to give him his food and insulin (PROZINC, 1 unit twice a day). Can I give him his insulin an hour early tonight and then an hour earlier in the morning or is this dangerous? The vet said the timing should be only changed 1/2 hour a day but I don’t have that kind of time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would not necessarily give insulin an hour early tonight and then another hour early tomorrow morning. This is confusing. So he would be getting shots at what we call +11 tonight (11 hours after his previous shot) and +11 again in the morning (11 hours after tonight’s shot?).

Okay. Then it may not be a problem with shooting a little early if he’s quite high, does he/has he ever dropped low on ProZinc or has he always been high? If he is a bouncy cat then I would not recommend shooting early because if he’s clearing a bounce he could drop lower than you want. If he’s pretty much high all the time for the last week then you are probably in the clear. I would love to help you with his ProZinc dosing/management when you get a spreadsheet set up (when you get time! Things sound a little crazy for you recently.). I would like to hear more about you and your baby!

Thank you! He’s always been pretty high. Yesterday was the exception because they put him in short acting insulin at the hospital. Otherwise, he stays in the 300s mostly and he’s been high all day. I guess I could just listen to the vet and do it in 30 minute increments. It would be a tight squeeze tomorrow but I can deal with that. I love him so much, he’s such a goofy guy who hates the vet with a burning passion

I also work one day a week where I don’t get home until 9:45 pm so I don’t know how I’m going to work that out

30 minutes per day is usually the recommended amount of time to advance a shot (or to shoot late if it’s the other way around.)

Oh poor guy has to go to the vet tomorrow! Enemas can be very stressful for a cat.

The vet seemed fine with this on Vetsulin. But I don’t know about PROZINC
Well, I have worked with people who had to shoot late in the evening because of work (and therefore early in the morning). It can be done with ProZinc. With Vetsulin, the duration is so short and the cat usually starts heading up after 4 hours or so. With ProZinc you will have much better duration, but we should still be able to work it out. After you get through this vet visit tomorrow ad can get a spreadsheet set up, I can get a better idea of your daily schedule and the BG numbers that you are getting.

Well, I talked to the vet and he said it’s fine to give insulin late one night and that it shouldn’t be a problem. I’m a little nervous about a hypo episode but I guess he knows what he’s talking about. The good news is that Raj didn’t have to have an enema because he pooped this morning at the 11th hour lol
