My cat was diagnosed with Diabetes in November after a trip to the Emergency Vet. He currently is on Dr. Elseys High Protein Dry Food. He won’t touch wet food. We are on (3) Units twice and day and get consistent BG readings in the 320-360 range. We can not get his BG to go down. Please Help!!!

Hello and welcome. What is your kitty's name? How was he diagnosed? Can you tell me what type of insulin he's on? Are you home testing his blood sugars? and if so, what type of meter. Sorry for the million questions but we need a few answers before we can help more.

Good evening. Thank you. His name is Little Man. He is 7.5 years old. He was diagnosed after an emergency vet visit when he was vomiting and had experienced weight loss. He was in TKA and spent several days there. He is on Glargine by Lantus. We are currently on 3 units twice a day. Yes we are home testing as much as he will allow us with Alphatrak 3 meter. I welcome any questions and all the help I can get.

Sorry to hear he had a rough start with the DKA. Are you home testing him for ketones as well? I hope he's started to gain weight again now.

Lantus/glargine is a good insulin. I'm glad to hear you are home testing his blood sugars. The AT meter is a bit spendy with the test strips. Most of us end up using human meters cause that way we can test more for less cost. Here are some tips for testing that might make things easier: Hometesting Links and Tips. Finding a treat he likes is key.

We have a post here worth reading: New? How You Can Help Us Help You! If it's possible for you to set up a spreadsheet with his blood sugar numbers, we'll be able to provide more help. If that's a technical challenge for you, let us know, we have people who can help.

He has gained about a pound back but is still eating and drinking excessively and of course filling the litter box. We just purchased the ketone meter from Amazon. We checked them today and they were .4 with a BG of 322 at 11:00 am this morning. We are only able to prick his paws to get blood. He is not about the ear poke. Is this ok? Which human meter do you recommend that will work for cats? Also I would like some help doing a spreadsheet and how often should readings be taken? Thanks a lot.

Welcome. We have people that can help with the spreadsheet. Please set up a signature.

As for food, will he eat cooked chicken or any other protein? If so you can make ur Oisin and add a supplement t such as EZ Complete or Superior Feline. One if my cats has skin allergies so I use Superior Feline aa they have a chicken free one. @Bandit's Mom

Thank you. He will definitely eat cooked chicken and loves turkey as well. What is Oisin? Add the supplements and this would be his full-time food? Not just a treat.

Sorry for the typos. If you get a supplement and add protein it is a complete meal. I gave one cat on chicken and the offer eating bison. Some do raw but since the avian flu I have been cooking the protein. You can bake the protein or use a slow cooker or boil it. I make enough to last 2-3 weeks and freeze in daily portions. I can only get ground bison so I pan fry t. Then I mix the supplement with water and add it to the protein and stir. That’s it.

Mist pate style canned food is low carb.

A lot of people in the US get a Relion meter from Walmart. The Premier model I think? It has low cost test strips.

I used to feed home made food too, with a meal completer. Besides the ones mentioned above, there is also Alnutrin and TC Feline. We also have some people who make their own complete from scratch with the recipe on the catinfo website.
