Hi Everyone! My cat Tootoo has been doing very well with the help of the board members here and various information I've found on this site. He is running blues and greens only, and his current dosage is .4. The thing I'm concerned about is that I know he needs some dental care. He's never had any, and he's ll years old. He turns his head when he chews as though his gums are uncomfortable. I'm thinking I need to address this soon.

What is recommended for a diabetic cat in terms of dental care? I hate the thought of putting him under anesthesia, which is why I've avoided the whole subject with him. Are there alternatives? Can he be lightly sedated instead of put entirely under? I don't have much trust in the vet who diagnosed his diabetes (she promoted continuing dry food and discouraged home testing), so I'm looking at finding a new vet. Anyway, I'd like to hear back from members here as to how they've handled the dental issue. My civvie cat needs it too.

Thanks!

Debbie

Not sure just how far Wilsonville is from Portland but there are 3 diplomats for dental surgery in Portland http://avdc-dms.org/dms/list/diplomates.cfm?CFID=11934033&CFTOKEN=28618916#US_OR I'm fortunate that I am not far from a Board Certified Dental Specialist for my 3 diabetics. It costs more but I feel better knowing they are getting top care. I would at least get a physical done before surgery and have kidney values, heart, etc. all checked out.

Also, just as a heads up, dental issues can cause elevated BGs, so if he's got any infections or problems that are taken care of in his mouth, you'll probably need to decrease his insulin dose. It might even be the teeth issues that spurred on his diabetes. If that's the case, you have a much higher chance at remission. :-D

There have been so many questions about dentals, that Sienne and Gabby put together this post with a compendium of dental information for people to refer to. Dental procedures

I bookmarked it for future reference. Hope this link helps you out with your dental care questions.
