First off, Angel has had NO insulin for over a week, thanks to this board, I'm so grateful I found you.

With the trial he is on it is a very low cut off point when to inject, 7/122!! ON AN ALPHATRAK. This is because he is a big cat, it's a tiny dose, (he's on PROZINC) and he only gets jabbed if he's eaten a big meal and I'm around to keep an eye on him. (although I used my discretion on the 3rd and did not give him any insulin). Well after getting all these lovely low numbers I opened a new pack of strips as I'd mislaid the others (which are still in date) put in the correct code for that pack, and got a reading of 7.4. I know Angel had got into the kittens food overnight so after speaking to the clinic I with held the insulin. Found my other pack of strips and got a nice low reading last night. This morning as an experiment I tried the new pack and got a reading of 8./144 I then immediately tried the other pack and got 6.1/110.

I spoke to Abbot UK who were very unhelpful, they said it was an acceptable margin, even though I pointed out twice that it was the difference between giving insulin and not giving insulin. I then performed a control test. First strips read 7.2, 2nd read 8.2. The range is 5.5-10.7. I would say the first ones are more likely to be correct as they are in the middle. I spoke to Ruth at the clinic and she's sending me another batch of strips. Meanwhile she's suggested I test him with both strips and take the average. Think I will carry on with the first set though, especially as I won't be around in the day tomorrow. Ruth will also speak to Abbot and Angel has a vets appt anyway on Friday late morning.

So I've been stressing that maybe he hasn't really been in remission, but Ruth said that if he's had no insulin for over a week 8/144 is a good number. Aaaargh!!

Angel is so lovely with the kittens now and gives them both a thorough washing, he's an amazing big brother.

xx

It would not be unexpected to see such a change due to a different lot of strips. The +/- 20 accuracy is based on both meter and strip tolerances. Thus with a change in strips lots a step increase in indicated BG value could be due to the different lot of strips.
Just make a decision of what to do. I myself would raise your cut off a little.
Also, I would also do some BG between shot when you have "high" BG to see if if and how much it goes up.

thanks Larry,

just tested the same drop of blood with both sets, and both readings were below the cut off point, 6.1 and 6.9 (110 and 125) so that's good.
