Hi. My cat just got diagnosed with urinary tract infection and he's on day two of antibiotics. Probably because I
of this he's started peeing on the area rug. I'm in a small apartment so the litter boxes are close.

Two things - how do I get him back to using the litter box and how do I get rid of the smell? I washed the carpet three times but the underside is stained and smells. I would throw it away but not my house or area rug.

Added note. While typing this he just used the litter box!

When he begins to feel better, he should start using the litterbox again. For the smell, you can use any of the enzyme cleaners to remove it. A good one is Nature's Miracle.

Hi KittyMom77, I feel your pain and concur with Lisa on Nature's Miracle!

They have different varieties but Just for Cat Advanced Stain and Odor Remover is in a large gallon for generous enzymatic soaking...Amazon ships outside of the US to select countries.

I used many different sprays but found that I needed to POUR, douse, and drown the urine spots in this stuff (dry, soak, repeat) more than once to finally get rid of the odorific urine smell.

Try adding extra water to your kitty's food. It should make urination less painful while the antibiotics are doing their work.

An interim fix for the smell would be to saturate the soiled area with Febreze and blot off the excess (trigger bottle's better than spray).

should I do that when he's already drinking a huge amount? We havent got the diabetes controlled yet.

Adding water to the food may cut down some on the drinking.

Also, Simple Solution by Bramton Company, works very well, too.

The worry with a UTI is that a cat may stop drinking enough because it's painful to pee. If your cat still has polydipsia then insufficient water consumption may not be such an issue.

It's so hard to tell how much he is drinking when j am put all day and have two cats :-(

How long does it take for antibiotics to work? Vet gave me enough for 12 days but is also doing a "culture"? to see what bacteria is and may change the type of antibiotic.

True, you won't know which cat drank and which may not have done so. But you will still have a clue if you measure what you put down, then measure what is left, subtract and see how much was consumed and evaporated. Changes alert you to something being up, although not specifically what is going on.
