Crystal is in distress trying to go to the toilet, keeps straining in her litter tray, crying and growling but passing nothing. Not sure how long she has been like this, just the last hour or so as she has just come in from outside. Just been sick as well, but just looks like her feed. Nealy midnight here so can't get to the vet easily, has anyone got any ideas what I could give her, if anything, to help her.

Re: Urgent - constipated cat

Awww poor kitty I had a bout of constipation with Trey a few months back and it was bad. I didn`t know he was blocked for a while anyway ended up vets for enemas for 6 days. Now Trey is on Lactulose gets 2ml every second day and is doing great. If you can get fluids I wish I could help you more give her some butter maybe to get a little oil in her. Will send her tons of healing green light to help your little kitty.....you said she has been sick please check with vet or the people here before you take my advice.....this is what I do for my cats. Hugss and prayers heading your way Kath & Trey

Re: Urgent - constipated cat

Thanks for your hugs Kath, she is still pacing the room so I think I'll try to get a couple of hours sleep (half one in the morning here) and take her first thing in the morning to the vet to get checked out. I don't think lack of fluid is a problem as she is always drinking, just don't know what's wrong with her, poor little girl.

Re: Urgent - constipated cat

Time to read Feline Constipation and learn more than you ever thought you needed to know about the feline GI tract. Maybe some ideas which can help.

Re: Urgent - constipated cat

I used the spreadsheet that BJM linked. There is a great section on helping your kitty at home. It might have just been co incidence but I tried a couple of things on that and he eventually went (cotton bud-I won't say anymore). In the past I took him to the vets for an enema. It wasn't pretty!

Re: Urgent - constipated cat

Crystal update - neither of us had a good night's sleep, she was sick a couple of more times, but when I got up at 5 am I could see that she had passed a very large stool (quite soft but with 2 hard bits in it and a little bloody mucas - sorry about the details!) and her rear end was quite messy. After I had cleaned her up, which she allowed with a few soft growls, she had her test and then her normal shot but only had about a mouthful of her raw mix but plenty of water. She has since done another little stool but doesn't want to eat, very lethegic. Waiting to phone the vet in about an hour to see whether I should take her, hope it might just be a one off incidence. I read also that green beans are good for fiber in the diet, as well as squash, I will add some to her diet from now on. I gave her a little olive oil last night and some unsalted butter, maybe they helped her? Just of to digest the Feline Constipation link that a couple of you sent me, many thanks for all your advice and hugs.

I give mine a small amount of 100% pumpkin almost every day. It has really done the trick and keeps er very regular (the dog also)
I hope that all goes well at the vets today!!

How do you prepare the squash Terriy? I have some in the oven now, just plain, and then I'll puree it down and add some (how much?) to her feed and see how that goes. She's looking a bit brighter at the moment and has had a small meal but I'm watching her rear end closely.

I also give Dusty a little canned pumpkin with each meal. I give him about 1/16 tsp and mix it up with his wet food. If your kitty doesn't like it at first start with a toothpick tip amount and gradually increase. With Dusty any more than 1/16 tsp will result in too soft poop. One thing I discovered was causing Dusty's constipation was chicken Purebites. Those freeze dried pure chicken snacks, I guess they're too dry or something.

Crystal's managed to eat just a little squash mixed in with her raw chicken mix so hopefully it will have the desired effect, not too keen on the green beans though. She doesn't have any dry food now, nor do the other three civvies and they're not very happy about it, one of them broke into the dog biscuits earlier in the week in desparation but Crystal unfortunately got to them as well. Hope she is feeling better, she certainly looks better, after giving me a panic attack last night. She hasn't eaten too much today so don't expect anything in the litter tray tonight but keeping a watchful eye on her.

I hope Crystal feels better soon. I feel for you both: GI problems are tough on both cat and caregiver.

FWIW, one of the few foods that Saoirse can tolerate (she has pancreatitis) doesn't have any soluble fibre added and it tended to bind her. Although Saoirse quite likes pumpkin I was worried I wouldn't be able to gauge the amount properly, so instead I add the barest eensy-teensy-weensy pinch-ette of psyllium husk to the food. It seems to work well, and she produces firm but yielding stools. I also add water to all of her meals.

Thanks for the suggestion. At the moment she is looking much better but I've not really been around much today to see what's in the litter tray (i've had a very severe gastric attack and been in bed all day, apart from frequent visits to my own litter tray).
Hubby informs me she is eating normally and going out so fingers crossed it was only a one off, but I was so worried about her.
I'll be talking to my vet tomorrow. Good tip about adding water, I'll give it a go.
