I have tried everything humanly possible to get Lucifer to eat today. He barely ate this morning. He had higher sugar all day. I haven’t tested just yet. He has to have his shot around 9pm.

I have tried wet food, broth, baby food, tuna, even the DM dry food which I don’t really use. He won’t eat much of anything. I made a mixture of broth, chicken baby food, and wet food and have him at least 3 droppers full of that, and two or three of just broth.

He will eat the Tiki lick sticks from a pouch but doesn’t want much else. I’m at a loss. Is he eating enough for a shot? Is there a way to get his appetite back up?

UPDATE-
Since the feeding his glucose level was 515. We gave the 1 unit of insulin. Ten minutes later he threw up. I feel terrible it was probably from giving him the droppers? Will this be bad for the insulin?

Have you been testing Lucifer for ketones? I'm a little worried about inappetance and high numbers. I'm glad you gave at least some insulin.

Some tips for cats not wanting to eat:
Give him some time, maybe half an hour, and try feeding again. Lantus/glargine doesn't onset, or kick in, for a couple hours, so you have some time to get food in him. Plus he's so high he should be OK.

Do you know if he has other conditions that might cause him to be nauseous?

Thank you I will look at all this. I think that what made him throw up was he had to take his Gabapentin liquid too and it’s very bitter. After that he threw up. He was tested for ketones Thursday and everything came back okay.

Can you test for ketones at home? Ketones can go from trace to high in a day.

I used to give Gabapentin as a pill in a pill pocket. I think your theory on throwing up could be right. Give him a bit of time to the taste out of his mouth.

He’s really tough to take pills and he also started Zonisamide and the Gabapentin a couple days ago. They are lowering his Zonisamide because it’s an appetite suppressant. I have not tested for them before but I have read how on here and could try to get supplies tomorrow. What happens if he does have them?

I know it has not yet been the full two hours (insulin given at 9). But he has gone from a level of 515 at 9pm to 581 at 1030. I know Glargine takes two hours to kick in and he’s not regulated yet. My question is if it continues to rise after that what do I need to do? What level is a concern?

at this point, you're so early in this process that 400, 500, 600 - they are all just high there is nothing that different about them far as I know.
I know exactly how you feel. Seeing the high numbers for Hen would always make me feel dismayed. But you're most likely going to see them for a while, it's a marathon not a sprint.

There's no number that I am aware of that is so high you need to take some sort of action. Being in high numbers for an extended period of time is the concern (days, weeks, etc) as that is when the ketones can develop.

Okay I will keep all this in mind and just keep on moving forward. We will keep working to get there.

another thing that takes some getting used to is active vs in-active cycles.

sometimes, you shoot the insulin dose and do your BG tests and it feels like you gave no insulin at all. The numbers don't really drop, or even go up. It happens and for whatever reason it's like the insulin is taking the night off. Nothing you can do about it when it happens.

Okay I will get those tomorrow and I want to try to find the freeze dried snacks and some others I saw posted here.

If a cat isn't feeling well, perhaps cause of the vomits, that can temporarily increase the numbers. And when you look at it, 515 and 581 are actually pretty close in number. Meter manufacturers are working in a 20% tolerance, so those two numbers are withing that range.

I haven’t taken his sugar yet as it is too early before his shot. But he’s up and running around meowing and climbing things this morning which is his normal active self so I’m hoping it went down. He keeps going to the closet where the food is, fingers crossed he will eat breakfast in a few.
