help please--Isabelle has Gone Ahead

We lost our male cat (Sergei) 4 weeks ago Monday to what appears to have been HCM. His Sister(Isabelle) had been responding to hiss passing as we assumed she would.....looking for him around the house, picking up his habits, occasional loneliness. Her health seemed unchanged - reasonable activity considering her age(15), appetite and elimination unchanged... Until today. This morning she seemed a little out of routine.... Tonight she is very lethargic, not purring at all(very unusual), and feverish. She seems to be struggling to focus. Her eyes are rolling back and exposing the whites. This all came on suddenly and I'm very concerned - any suggestions?

Re: help please

I recommend that you take her to the vet ASAP. Is there an emergency vet nearby if your vet is closed for the day? That is not normal behavior and with it coming on suddenly, is a concern.

Re: help please

I have call in to our regular vet. His office closes sooner than I could be there. He will call back before he leaves, but I don't know what sort of advice he could give without seeing her.... I also don't have much faith in vets after what we experienced with Ser. It seems like the visits just made him feel uncomfortable and there was nothing they could do for him anyway..... All that being said - my biggest concern is that she is in some sort of pain, but I can't tell.

Re: help please

This could be an illness, a toxin, or an occult injury and waiting leaves her in jeopardy plus possibly pain or feeling sick. I know it is expensive, but if your regular vet is closed, and emergency vet is where you should go now.

Re: help please

(((Robin and Keith))) I am so sorry. I hope it is nothing serious! Please let us know how it goes at the vet. I am sure you are on your way. This is so not fair especially in light of your sweet Sergei's recent passing. Sending prayers for your girl.

Re: help please

I forgot to mention - our cats have been indoor exclusive. Since Ser's passing we've allowed occasional guided walks outside to try to allow Sissy some distraction. Not sure if it helps, but I read it online and thought we'd give it a try. I did take her out for a 5 min stroll tonight in the back yard and she seem less responsive than usual, but responsive nonetheless.

Just a moment ago (after I posted), she spit up a bit of grass(not unordinary), and then went to get a drink of water. She is walking fine, a bit weak, and still seems a bit out of it, but is now purring.

Re: help please

Sending prayers and purrs for Isabelle. Hope it is nothing serious, please keep us posted.

Re: help please

Did you recently have your house or lawn treated with any pesticides? I agree with the other readers, it sounds like an emergency and I wouldn't wait. I don't know what area you are in... Maybe someone can give you the number to an emergency vet or 24 hour animal hospital. If you live in south florida I can give you some resources.

Re: help please

No pesticides.

Our Doc called back. I explained the symptoms. He couldn't offer much advice - said to make an appt for tomorrow and keep our eyes on her, and that if she gets worse to take her to the emergency hospital.

She laid on the couch with me for about 2hrs very quietly(too quiet), and I was worried sick about her. Then she started stretching and purring. She got up laid on the floor a bit, then went to the kitchen and ate some. She went to the litter pan and peed, and is resting now. I'm certain that its not poison or trauma....perhaps some sort of organ failure -? I'm curious too about grief - is it possible that she is grieving for her lifelong companion, and just now realizing that he is not coming home? Again, my biggest concern is that she is in pain - which, if she was seems to have subsided for now. We'll have an appt tomorrow if she doesn't turn around.

I thought of that too and tried to get it out of my mind. It would be so sad if that were the case and yet how would we know? I am sure she loves both of you with all her heart though. I am praying that this 'something' that was bothering her will pass and she will be fine tomorrow. She knows you both love her, just keep telling her that. Please keep us posted. (((hugs)))

Re: help please

I hope that your kitty is alright and you took her to the vet. When a cat, dog or person for that matter has theiir eyes roll back and suddenly become unresponsive, that is basically a warning sign. Could be a petit mal seizure, small stroke (TIA) , change in blood pressure, hypoglycemic, etc. Please have kitty checked out if you haven,t already done so. Even if the seem OK later on, whatever underlying process caused the symptoms is still there. Keep us updated! :-)

Re: help please

For those who tuned in, and are keeping up - thanks!

We woke up Thursday and our Sissy seemed still a little sluggish, but moving around, eating, drinking, using the litter pan... So we did not go to the vet. Last night she improved more, and this morning seems to be acting like herself - attentive, engaged etc....

I don't know if this is grief, or if she has some failing organs, or if she is just slowing down. We'll be keeping a close eye on her.

Re: help please

I am glad she seems better but, I would still definitely take her to the vet for a check over. Sometimes the sick get better before they get worse - you would hate yourself if that happened and you had ignored it.

Re: help please

Mugsy's Mom just said exactly what I was thinking. There is an old saying "better safe than sorry". I am glad your cat is doing better and there may be other factors why you can't take her to the vet now, like maybe financial. I don't want to sound judgemental but I am frankly alittlle pluzzed about this whole situation. Maybe some other readers can share their thoughts. ????

Re: help please

Ser's sister cat - Izzy is not well. The vet visit results were saddening. I just felt blessed to have her come home and do whatever we can to make her comfortable.
Rectal Exam,Temp. ( normal) Cytology, Small Plate Radiograph were done. Our vet is not a pathologist...but did draw fluid from the "lump". He said the cells were in all direction and that it was a large lymph node.
Most likely cancerous. He then showed me the x rays and the lymph node is right at the rectum area - hence the reason Izzy is straining so hard. All along I thought it was constipation...I saw where her colon was almost clear. He said to feed her whatever she wants, comfort her and begin prednisolone for the next 7 days. He said that this drug is common to give to "patients" in the hopes of reducing the size of the lymph node(s).
He wants us to call weekly. What else can we do?
She is so beautiful and strong. She lost ser as well and is doing her best to "just be". So many of her "ways" have already changed...i am sad if i think too long
I just do not want her to suffer in pain----and can only pray for a peaceful rest and be here for her.

Robin....and Keith

Re: help please - Ser's sissy has passed

 (My dear beautiful sister belle cat) Isabelle has went to find her brother...just six weeks to the day after Sergei's passing. The three of us hadn't gotten over his passing.
She was so loving and beautiful til the end. She allowed me to be with her 5 hrs. to talk, cry, listen to our favorite music together, hold and touch each other and cry some more. We were home and my heart is filled with that.

I took Izzy for a second opinion on saturday. The results were even more precise and saddening. At this point she had been straining to have a bowel movement for 9 days, stopped eating and drinking for 24 hrs. She had several masses throughout her... belly, heart, kidney. She so missed her baby brother and I just couldn't put her through anymore. She was lonely, sad and sick. I wanted to let her go to find ser and to be free.

She was my christmas gift girl and we were out numbered in our home for 15 years. I miss her.

Sending a universe of gratitude to all of you wonderful cat loving people for your advice, kind written words and wisdom over the past months for our Sergei and Izzy.

Peace,
Robin

Re: help please

Oh my goodness I am SO sorry to read this. My sincere condolences, you must be heartbroken and lonely. Fly free lil Izzy free to be with your brother Ser. A very sad day.

Prayers through tears,
jeanne

Robin, this is so sad to read and heartbreaking for you. Poor Isabelle......doesn't seem fair that she had to grieve through the lost of her buddy but then to have to leave so soon afterwards.......you have my heartfelt sympathy on her passing. Seems sometimes whatever is going on in their body, they seem to hold it off till something affects them deeply and it just brings them down so quick. She is now with her Ser and at peace and may time bring you nothing but beautiful memories of both and not tears. My heart truly goes out to you.

So sad and so heartbreaking for you. It's hard enough to lose them but so quickly after losing Ser ... I'm sorry. My thoughts are with you.

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((ROBIN))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

I am so very sorry you have lost your two babies so close together. Wrapping you in cyber hugs. Isabelle is flying free now, whole and healthy over the Rainbow Bridge-with Sergei. rb_icon

I am so sorry for your loss.

I know the pain of losing two so close together. Smokey on November 18 2008, and
Mr. Kitty on January 15, 2009 (rectal cancer).

It is almost unbearable.

My deepest sympathies.
