Hey everyone,

I was wondering what form of B12 (pill vs. injection) you guys are using for your cats - my kitty has peripheral neuropathy and I want to call the vet tomorrow and request B12 supplementation. Injectable form would be ideal if it comes as methylcobalamin... my kitty has peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes, which is a whole other subject because he is poorly regulated despite 6+ months or intense trying/research/vet apts, etc.

Thanks everyone :)

With Musette I used the pill form and just crushed it and put it in her food. You don't need a vet to prescribe it, you can pick it up at most places that sell vitamins and supplements, and even order it online. I know some folks get it from IHerb.com but I'm not sure where hers came from since I already had hers since DCIN had sent me a bottle when I had adopted Maxwell formerly.

Hi. I use a liquid sublingual, and I mix it in his food as it is raspberry flavored. I get it from a store that doesn't exist out in Pennsylvania, I don't believe. The brand is Sun Harvest, and the store is Sprouts Farmers Market. If you put "liquid b12 methylcobalamin" into google you will get a number of possibilities. Good luck.

Does it truly work?

Fat Cat is 15-17 years old (I adopted him as a stray 14 years ago and he was full grown,so I dont really know his true age) - and he was diagnosed with diabetes back in October 2011. He is ~8.5-9lbs (despite his name, the most he has ever weighed is about 12lbs). He is unregulated - does not respond well to insulin...he's on lantus. He's gotten to the point where he will walk a few steps and lay down. Yesterday he was outside laying in the rain. I went and rescued him. He will now squat and pee where ever he is in the house because it's too much labor for him to make it back to the litter box. I feel so bad...

My parents (who take care of him when I'm out of town on medical rotations) want to put him to sleep - they say its torture to prolong this.

It worked wonderfully for Musette...but what helped the most was getting her regulated..

Is there anyway we can help you with that for Fat Cat? Perhaps if you could fill us in on things like what your dose is, what he eats, and are you testing at home etc. we can help you help him better.

He's on 4.5 units of lantus, twice a day. we started out at 0.5 units and progressively increased the dose very slowly- he started on glargine at the end of novemeber and its now June - so we made those changes over a 6 month period (to avoid somogyi effect). He eats wet food - chicken, oceanfish, catfish Authority brand, and I also have the Inova Prime Grain Free dry food (~11% carbs) available all day. I used to do glucose curves and spot check at home - all numbers usually above 300-350 throughout the day. I spot checked him randomly about 2 weeks ago out of curiousity and he was 290 (which is very good for him). His fructosamine level 2 months ago showed "poor regulation". I wish he would respond like a lot of other kitties. Breaks my heart. The worst part of having a pet is losing them. He just looks pitiful - I hate it.

Couple of things....Ditch the dry food altogether...even low carb dry can effect a lot of diabetic's BGs...and even at 11% carbs it is still higher than most of us find works for our diabetics.

Second I would start a spreadsheet and link it on here so we can see what you see with numbers. And of course start testing again once the dry food has been eliminated. Then if getting completely rid of the dry doesn't bring his numbers down I would highly suggest getting him tested for IAA and Acromegaly, because something is very off here...I don't have any first hand experience with Acro but we do have a complete ISG for kitties with the condition, and there a bunch of wonderful folks there that can help you help him. It maybe that he is indeed an Acrocat in which case he isn't a true diabetic in the way we normally think of a diabetic but that he has an additional health condition that needs more insulin than normal to bring his numbers inline...I know there have been acro-cats around here that have gotten up to 10u or more bid. So it maybe you are just going to have to keep going up until you find that magic dose for him.

And yes, I know how hard it is to have a pet and lose them....I lost my Musette 14 days ago, she was also a diabetic however what took her from me had nothing to do with her being diabetic.
